in case you can't read that w/out registering, here's a snippet:

"Frank Simek had cause to celebrate on Tuesday evening after being voted Wednesday's Sheffield Star and Green'Un Player of the Season.

Each of the six clubs covered by the two publications had three players nominated by their expert writers, with supporters then voting between the three for the prize."

Great news for Frankie, really shows the high regard in which he's held up there--respect he's earned, no doubt.
If Wednesday hadn't sputtered a bit at the beginning of the season, they may have made the playoffs with points to spare. But like you said, there's always next year.

awesome, i hope he stays at Wednesday. The Owls were one of the hottest teams in the league the second half of the season, Laws has turned Wednesday into a machine! If the chairmen opens up the pocket book just a little bit, this team will be automatically promoted next season!

Atta boy Frankie, way to make us proud! He's made more starts (excluding GKs) the last 2 seasons than any Yank in England and it's paid off. He's been stellar and was instrumental in SW's rise from relegation bound to narrowly missing out on the playoffs. We will see a lot of Frankie this summer and I'm excited.

Now it's McBride's turn to collect his POY from Fulham!

    here
It kills me how people compare Frankie to Albright based on Frankie's one cap against a bunkering team, and no one knowing whether Bradley told Frankie to play it safe & not get caught forward.

No disrespect to MLS, but Frankie's facing forwards like Earnshaw, Kamara, & Phillips &, last year, Andy Johnson. And, surely there is no team in MLS with a strike duo like Phillips & Kamara.

I'd love to see Simek go to CA this summer & prove his mettle there. Especially, if we could put together a competent back line.

Assuming Conrads out, due to injury

    Bornstein----?------?--------Simek

I think most people are cautiously optimistic about Simek and want to see more of him at international level. The problem with him for Copa America, even though I'm not against him going, is that he is used to playing against English CCC teams. I think it might be quite a difficult adjustment to play against South American national teams. We won't know how he would perform until he gets the chance though and that's why we're going to Copa America in the first place---to give players like Simek a chance to prove their mettle.

If we start Bornstein and Simek, we lose some height. Set piece goals might be our best chance of advancing and Albright is quite solid in the air. On the other hand, if one doesn't care about results at all in Copa, then why not select the riskiest players and try to play a more open, attacking style. The choice may ultimately depend on the coach's feeling of security.

Oh Albright's risky all right ...

I have to say, even though I'm not the biggest Aldark fan in the world (or, let's say I worry about the level of the USMNT if Chris is our best RB) that his biggest strength is getting forward out of the back. He is, however, prone to the occaisional poor turnover and loss of his mark in the box.

But Chris has matured into a better back than I expected. Simek could well be a better choice, but I would be surprised if he turned out to be a better threat going forward, in the short term, then Albright.

    Phillips? PHILLIPS?
    Ahem...Doyle, Lita and Kitson.

And, J: cunningham: Are you mad? Is Welsh water full of hallucinagens? Cunningham is fast. End of. Beyond that, where more good balls go to die than any suppossedly decent striker I've seen in a while.

DeMerit is not all that young, and no Cherundolo? Everyone seems quick to write him off.

    Impressive.

This is exactly right. I don't think anyone with a brain is writing off Simek after the Guatemala match as his advantage over Albright is that he may actually be able to defend well, which simply wasn't tested against Guatemala. I will say that if the USMNT is playing a bunkering Central American side at home, Albright is a better choice for the reasons Freisland states.

Seriously, he is a 1979 birth, only five years older than Pearce/Bornstein.

Not buying into the SteveC is done, but there is no "only" about five years. Or was that your point. Is 31 too old for a right back at a WC? No, but that's it for him, i'd think.

Well, let's just say "overlooked him" would be the short answer.

For the next cycle, it's all Cherundolo... speculate for 2014 all you want, but I doubt anyone supplants him, barring an O'Brien/Gibbs infection.

Cherundolo will probably play Gold Cup and skip CA.
You can't expect the man to play soccer 12 months a year.

He'll only be 30-31 in '10. And, people should go back and watch U.S. v. Italy '06. Cherundolo was incredible. He owned the Italians. He is an outstanding RB.
