Let's talk about signature moves/trademark play of individual players. Cuauhtémoc Blanco: 'Blanco Bounce' or 'Bunny Hop' http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bt5AKKb44-Q&mode=related&search= Zidane: 360 turn.... they called it sick move here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlCNPkPFXkU&mode=related&search= Ronadlinho: the elastico or whatever you call it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXqPEpeokCg Hugo Sanchez: bicycle kick.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRWsgOHAjE8 Roberto Carlos: Powerful cross/shot from the wing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YzQXBNQ7U5w C.Ronaldo: I dont know how to call this move.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=82ochcQ56Es Romario: trap skill http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hhLN7Lo-XJY David Beckham: Of course, his freekick is famous, but he has a style in the approach. His arm swinged backward....etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fA5TjkL19E
C.Ronaldo likes to do the rabona cross a lot...unfortunately I can't find any videos highlighting that specifically. Just a bunch of compilations. Another of his favorites is where he stops the ball with his front foot and puts it back in motion with his back foot(sometimes he does it all while he is still in the air. Is there a name for that?
Rodrigo Taddei: ‘The Aurelio’ http://www.channel4.com/sport/football_italia/oct21e.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHW5qg46x7U
Figo's run during a penalty kick is something special. The footage below showed it many times. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jLHG4MaTWI&mode=related&search= But he actually copied from Socrates. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcHHLJLK1DE&mode=related&search=
Simao picked up the same thing but a little variation, and he does it all the time. Figo does two or three short quick steps, two long slow steps, and then shoots. Simao does a few quick long steps(like he is gonna power it in), then a few short slow steps(changing momentum), and then goes for a corner.
Looking how players shoot their penalties has always been a thing for me. It's also pretty clear that if you can shoot a ball hard to one side, that's always the best way, because not even if a keeper picks a corner and does not wait and look and still picks the right one, a hard shot will never be saved. I must say though that Litmanen, who always waited for the goalkeeper to pick a corner, is the only player that made me doubt my own conclusion. He could take a penalty kick and I would never feel a goalkeeper would save his shot.
Not true...I have seen some pretty powerful low corner shots saved because of good anticipation. Ex...Portugal v England in the WC.
Jay-Jay Okocha had a "runover" a variation of stepovers (rather than a scissoring action from in to out, he made a motion running directly over the ball from out to in that is pretty confusing the first time you see it) that drove defenders mad when he was on top form. He for me, is one of the funnest dribblers to watch since George Best. He enjoyed dribbling people for the sake of dribbling them and he had some very different dribbles that haven't been replicated.
Then they either weren't shot hard enough or not enough to the side. Just saying it is possible to shoot a penalty that cannot be saved. Did you hear that, Dutch, English and Italians?
Ex-Bologna, Lazio, and Italy NT striker Giuseppe Signori used to take penalties by just standing next to the ball and placing it in. He never took a run up to the ball: http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/1999_2000/a/e004810.mpg http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/989a/r17a/000281.mpg http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/989a/r09a/000281.mpg http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/978a/r02a/000281.mov http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/967a/r11r/000281.mov http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/967a/r09a/000282.mov http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/956a/r11r/000281.mov http://www2.raisport.rai.it/mcalcio/956a/r02r/000281.mov Sorry for the link overdose, I just found lots of examples...there were more though...
When I first saw Socrates in 1986, I was amazed by his style. I tried to copy it, but after I saw him missing the one against France in 1986, I realzied every single keeper in the world knew his style and waited for his shot. So it was not practical. Meanwhile, I found a footage of C.Roanldo's stepover. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xmgQmqTVh4 The other Ronaldo is also known for his stepovers.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYOf5vecg5U And we forgot the most original of all.... Kerlon the seal!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5LdH_km-_o&mode=related&search=
I would say that Oswaldo Sanchez's penalty shennaigans warrant a place here...albeit very ineffective (well all the matches where I've seen, he's saved none)
BBC's website has video tutorials on how to perform some signature moves of some of the Brazilian players. It is under Video Masterclasses in skills and tricks http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/skills/default.stm
How could I forget- Francesco Totti - The Chip Shot (Il Cucchiaio) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwVB7zDCH0I http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWBRvMi_nzk
Im sure we all know Zizous Marsailles Roulette. No need for a video. Fine, fine, here ya go: Explained: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khg-R2GbvMI Comp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBcD_XY6MjI
Funny thing is that while C. Ronaldo's stepovers are alot faster, the "other" Ronaldo's are a whole lot more effective.
The thing is... the "other" Ronaldo did stepovers in one on one situations to free himself. Its not hard to get into one on one situations as a striker. In a one on one situation, you can fake left or right, and go with it. C. Ronaldo is a winger, which means he has a lot more defense to go through, not to mention the fact that coaches regularly have two men marking him, sometimes three. When you have three people covering you, it gets quite a bit more complicated than just faking left or right.
Not as much as the one-on-one. It's actually easier for a winger to be one-on-one than a striker IMO. But the striker can run directly at the defender while the winger has to run at an angle.
We have always called the move Zidane is doing the "Maradona" but I have no idea why we did that, anyone know what Maradona's signature move was? Also I have heard Pele's was the bicycle, did he actually invent the bicycle? Another signature move that has a name is a move we call "The Brazilian" which is where you are running at a defender and kick the ball around one side of him and then run around the other side. I also don't know if this is the right name, or who invented it.
