Siena are now owned by the famous bank in Italy Monte Paschi di Siena and the bank wants to change the name of the team to Montepaschi Siena. No Italian soccer team has a sponsor as it's name, but it is common practice in Italian basketball and volleyball. http://www.tuttomercatoweb.com/index.php?action=read&id=58915
It happened before... The most famous case is that about Vicenza. Associazione Calcio Vicenza was founded in 1902 ( also if took part to a FIGC offical championship only in 1910 ). In 1953 the club was bought by textile company Lanerossi and changed its name to Lanerossi Vicenza. The name was changed to Vicenza Calcio in 1990. Then there is the case of Torino which was renamed Talmone Torino for the season 1958-59 ( afetr the chocolate company Talmone ). Monza was named Simmenthal Monza after the famous food company form 1958 to 1962. A.C. Mantova was named OZO Mantova from 1956 to 1961 ( not confirmed, maybe longer ) after the name of a petrol company. Modena Fc was named Zenit Modena for two years 1957-59 ( after the name of an oil company ) US RAvenna was named Sarom US Ravenna from 1954 to 1964 after the name of an oil refinementcompany. This stratagem was used to introduce sponsorship which was not permitted at the time. It's interesting to see that it was not lucky... Talmone Torino was relegated to serie B and Zenit Modena fell in serie C for the first time in Modena history (Ozo on the other way was a lucky name for Mantova... )
I'm so against this. Let's hope other sponsors don't do the same.. Imagine AC Milan being known as Bwin Milano.
