MLS ratchets up focus on winning CCL
Subcommittee formed with eye on ending Mexican teams' run

By playing in the CCL, these 4 teams will be at a disadvantage compare to other MLS teams who do not, especially when they are chasing one of the playoff spots.

Unlike other leagues in the CCL, MLS has a strict $2.55 mil salary cap and strict rosters (20 senior players).

Any MLS teams that reach the Group Stage should get 2 extra roster spots and $200,000 cap room for 1 year to deal with their schedule congestion. Thoughts?

But CCL allows up to 30 players to be on rosters, so what difference does it make?

The salary cap isn't as strict as you like to say it is. I'd point out why but you'd just ignore all my points anyway.

    LOL!

Actually I would like the idea to allow teams to sign 2 players that are only allowed to play in CCL and not in MLS (maybe US open cup). They can sign them for 6 months (the 6 group games) and then if the team advances they can sign the player for an extra 6 months or per game.

yes I know the type of player you would get would not be of great quality but it could help.

I believe that the MLS roster limit is 26 total players anyways right?

I hope you understand that teams like the Puerto Rico Islanders probably have less money to spend then the 2.55 Million dollar salary cap the MLS runs on.

    All your points are moot.

Going along with his point, Toronto FC has brought in Academy players like Joseph Nane and Doneil Henry specifically for CCL games.

But I do think that MLS teams that play in the CCL should get something in the way of what pc4th is talking about (extra roster spots and/or $200k extra on their salary cap). Why? Because they're the ones who qualified for international competition in the first place, and they're representing league and country in the CCL.

For what I've read in this forum, I think MLS Fans should realize that the growth of your league, doesn't depend on how much do you spend on players, but in how much do you spend on your academys.

Development of young talent is very important, the most important thing for any league. Look at Chivas, who made it to the final of Copa Libertadores mostly because of their young talent. Look at Barcelona youth team, they have many players with a lot of talent for the future.

The problem with MLS is not the first squads, you have to work on the depth of the league. To have U-20, U-17, U-15 tournaments with the same format that your league like in Mexico and other countries will help you.

jajajaja!!!! With 2.55M we easily make the world club championship (is not true, but it look like). The main problem of the MLS and their fans is that the felt that they are more of what they really are. That is why they easily get so disappointed. :D

Like someone said, I'm pretty sure MLS teams can allready bring in more players than they have on their MLS rosters to compete in the Champions League, so those two extra players would have to be available in MLS as well in order to have any effect.

I'm not necesarily against this proposal, but I'm concerned about the offseason implications of adding two players and 200k for the Champions League teams. It would add a good deal of stress for teams who don't qualify back to back times, because they would have to reorganize their roster even more than normal at the end of the season. Also, what happens if an MLS team makes the finals? The final game of the tournament is right before the MLS season if not during it. These teams would have only a couple weeks to reshuffle their rosters before the MLS season began again.

Joseph Nane was one of our draft choices from last year and isn't part of the academy but a full-fledged member of TFC.

Quite right about Doneil Henry though. Additionally, during the Nutrilite/Voyageurs Cup, TFC brought in a few other kids from the academy for the final and meaningless match against the Whitecaps.

A number of us expect Henry to be signed by TFC at some point in the near future. He had problems in Motagua but he has shown enough positives to make it clear that he can make the jump.

You're wrong. Each team can only have 20 seniors players and up to 6 developmental players (each has salary of $40,000). They can't bring in more players to compete in the CCL. As for availability, MLS bring in a lot of players in the July 15-August 15 transfer window and cut, retire a lot of players too.

As I stated, each team in the CCL Group Stage will have 2 temporary roster spots and $200,000 salary room for ONE YEAR. From August 5th of this year to August 5th of next year.

Instead of 20 Senior Players, the team will have 22 Senior Players. If they make the CCL Group Stage again, they keep the 2 temporary spots for 1 extra year, if they don't, they have to give it up on August 5th.

It will help the teams not only in CCL but also in MLS playoff chase. Playing in the CCL is a competitive disadvantage because of the schedule congestion.

A team that play 10 games in 50 days is better off than a team that play 16 games in 50 days .
