Following on from the Osvaldo Alonso issue.. if a talented Cuban player who has represented Cuba at international level in an "A" competition defects to USA and becomes an US citizen having resided in USA for 5 years, would you like to see him represent USMNT?
I'm pretty sure here that FIFA will take the easy way out, which is not to allow Alonso to play for us.
FIFA tries not to get politics involved. (Of course, it's soccer, and quite possibly one of the most politically relevant sports in the world). That being said, I have no problem with defectors wanting to to join the squads of their adopted homelands, and after 5 years, why not? I think the problem becomes where to draw the line, as you can't really have players jumping back and forth between countries.
