Totally agree that this was absolutely a security failing.

I also want to emphasize that any and every conspiracy theory related to this shooter can safely be dismissed with no evidence beyond this picture and the result. A reasonably experienced shooter with a bolt-action rifle and a scope could have taken Trump out at that range with one shot. This kid so obviously didn't know what he was doing that any attempt to claim he was the tool of some nefarious operation is absurd.

When I lived in Michigan in the early '90's, it wasn't uncommon during hunting season for guys to come to school with hunting rifles still in the racks on their pickup clubs. This was pre-Columbine, of course.

Serious gun owners and users will treat guns with the respect they deserve. Not the people who think they need a weapon used in combat for deer hunting.

My grandpa (Who wasn't rural, he was old school Detroit) was among other things, a gun range instructor. When I was 18, he showed me how to handle guns, and he stressed to always, always check to see if it was loaded. If you aren't sure, even if you checked 2 minutes ago as he put it, check again.

It's rather telling that the rifle club told him to not join them because of how bad his aim was. That's a unique danger in so many ways.

I did grew up in a factory town that has a state park, during hunting season it was encouraged we wear orange if we ran on the trails for safety reasons. I also knew plenty of people who were always excited for hunting season.

If some sort of nefarious deep state conspiracy was going to use some sort of patsy to try and take out the President, why would they use this guy? Plenty of better shooters out there that you could use. I don't buy that the JFK assassination was a conspiracy, but if it was, Lee Harvey Oswald was a pretty good choice as a shooter.

Still, this guy did get pretty damn close.

Exactly. It would be really easy to find a guy in Pennsylvania with a deer hunting rifle who could have hit Trump with the first shot. This kid clearly didn't know what he was doing.

I mean--closer than I would have. I'm not a great shot (yet, anyway--recently started practicing a bit more).

Of course, the SS gave him ample time to line up his shot as well as helpfully leaving a stable platform with a clear view free.

The Supreme Court disagrees. Or will, when Trump gets around to declaring it one.

I don't treat White supremacists the way I treat people who are not White supremacists.

I hope your high standards don't result in the extermination of Black folks like me and gay folks like Sounders. Because I know I cannot totally trust you to vote even to save my life, I can't take seriously your attempt to lecture me about how the Left should treat roaches.

This IS about the shooting, and how our current POTUS gave the enemy more time than the enemy woud have given Biden.

Having now seen what the campaign event site looked like, it's mind-boggling that the USSS didn't have someone on the roof of the building the shooter used. Even if they didn't have the personnel for that, they could have posted some local cops near the building to make sure no one went up there.

But, I do have some prosecutor friends who have done cases working with the USSS. We talked about this at the pool yesterday, and they said their general impression of Secret Service agents is that they're arrogant and buy into their own hype. They're not the type of people who ever believe they got something wrong.

"In journalism, mainstream media is the term used to refer collectively to the various large mass news media that influence many people and both reflect and shape prevailing currents of thought". We can agree on the definition, correct?

Local news is now about 10 min of local news, some local sports and weather and the rest comes straight from Sinclair HQ. Scripted.

"A 2019 study in the American Political Science Review found that "stations bought by Sinclair reduce coverage of local politics, increase national coverage and move the ideological tone of coverage in a conservative direction relative to other stations operating in the same market"

They own/operate around 190 stations in the US alone covering 40% of American households and is the largest owner of stations affiliated with Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, MyNetworkTV, and The CW among smaller local stations. Sinclair mandates its stations to air specific reports, segments, programs and editorials, referred to as "must-runs".

To me, this sounds like "large mass news media that influence".

The fact that you did not know this or even what Sinclair is, and yet here you are are making these comments with some sort of confidence or authority is exactly what is wrong with the American voter. You make comments without having a clue about what you are talking about because "they" told you so.

One story from my friends: two USSS agents coming to a meeting at a DOJ office building. They start going down a ramp into the garage, and a DOJ security guard tries to tell them they can't go down that way. They ignore him.

The reason he was telling them not to go that way? There are tire spikes at the bottom of the ramp, which was meant to be an exit only. The Secret Service agents proceeds to blow out all 4 of the tires on their SUV.

And don't forget that while rifle clubs are a-ok, gay student clubs are banned in various locations, under the pretense they indoctrinate children.

My sister had a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting in her high school. A few teachers organized and ran the whole thing.

I went to a Catholic High School, but my sister did not. That never made sense to me.

Why not? Public schools have to allow religiously based student organizations, same as they allow chess clubs, and Future Farmers of America.

I am a POC living in Texas. The main reason Biden is my fave is because he is everything Trump isn't and would never be.
If you want/prefer Biden to do exactly like Trump, then you do you.
