Is the cup to be held at the home of the highest seed of the entire playoff scenario, or is the cup held at the home of the highest seed that makes it to the cup? thanks!
The Cup will be held at the home of the team that makes the final with the most points earned in the regular season. If San Jose, or anyone else, wins the Supporters' Shield they only host the final if they win their conference playoffs.
when I read the rule I thought the Supporter Shield winner hosted the final, otherwise there really isn't alot of time to sell tickets, book travel, etc.
That is incorrect. The best team that makes the final gets the home game. There will be some time, though, because it is likely that the conference finals will end on November 17-18 with the Cup not until December 1. That avoids the Thanksgiving weekend and gives people 2 weeks to get ready. http://pressbox.mlssoccer.com/content/competition-rules-and-regulations
Is San Jose excluded from this?? Who the heck would want to go to Buckshaw for a MLS CUP FINAL??? Unless they can get the Stanford Stadium but i'm sure they'll have football lines there at that time.....Other teams that dont have stadiums are DC united and the REVS but none of their current locations are bad places for a FINAL.
Is it the highest seed or the team with the most points? I understood it as the most points. Two completely different things.
As far anyone knows San Jose is not excluded. There are lots of stadiums in the SF-Oak-SJ area where they could host.
That's a good question. I understood it as the team with the most points but the rule that I quoted says "highest seed". The MLS press release on the 2012 season says: The MLS rules are often misleading so we'll have to see if there is clarification but I think it will be the team with the most points.
I think going by points would be better, otherwise a wildcard time would have a very difficult time hosting a MLS Cup and it puts more incentive to win more games in the regular season.
There is a thread in MLS general about SJ hosting. They speak of the pros n cons of the various stadium options. It would be tremendous to see fate have both our teams meet up in a Cup Final. Just sayin'.
I would rather face LA again, but this time here in Houston. That would be my dream matchup. Other than that I don't care about the opponent, but hopefully someone with less points than the Dynamo.
FC Frisco is my dream match-up....here at home. Even if they pull off a miracle and they host, I'll still love it. I used gambling/poker as a metaphor for this when speaking to somebody. Facing FC Frisco in a MLS Cup Final is like going all-in. If you win you get those bragging rights forever! You get to beat those assholes and celebrate not only a championship but a ********ing derby victory....it doesn't get sweeter than that! However, a loss would mean....well....do I even have to go there? It's the heartbreak of losing a derby and championship wrapped in one and multiplied times a million cause it'll be happening at the same time.
i still don't see a Houston - Dallas as a big rivalry match. perhaps among a certain set of supporters, but to me LA and Seattle. would love to humilate both in a MLS Cup.
I see what you're saying but I was speaking realistically. Dallas has no chance of making the playoffs.
For me the Dallas fixture is the most played in Houston in all competitions and across all our past/present teams. The eternal rival for those of us fortunate enough to have lived (witnessed it) these encounters over 3 different Houston teams. For Dynamo junkies I would say the rivalry with Dallas crosses all sports and all aspects of how each city is different than the other. Other than that there is the beating them in the playoffs of our run to a second title even after we went behind 2-0 on agg by just the 15th minute of our home leg to then witness Ching and our boys stomp the living shit outta them with 4 unanswered goals! And yes K.C. is evolving nicely since '07 WCF to beating them last year this time in their house in the ECF no less.
