I don't want a 37 year old who has fallen out of favor. Also we have enough players who miss PKs already.

    Teddy?

With respect, he would be a different class in your league. The talent he has never dies. And I hate Spurs, Man U and Millwall!

Ok, no Thomas Hassler, but Teddy "Older Than Dirt" Sheringham is okay?

I am just saying what I think amigo?
Were you at the Santiago Bernabau this week? Good atmosphere marred by a bit of good old Italian Facism, don't you think?

It's silly to think Teddy wouldn't score a good amount of goals here, as he is still a great player.

This comes from someone who's been shut up by Teddy's play the last 4 years, when I called him the "English Wegerle".

I'll take Ante before Teddy Sheringham any day of the week and twice on Saturday.

That's not very appropriate for this family board.

Anyway, I don't see Teddy as a good fit for the Fire. I'm sure Ray would love to have him in DC, but I think Portsmouth will sign Teddy soon.

Sherringham is still a pretty darn good striker, even at 37. The fact that Sven took him to Japan last summer alone shows he still is a top player.

    Whatever.

Look, I'm not saying Hassler is a god of a player or anything, far from it, but I don't understand why when a foreign player rumor is posted here or anywhere, if that player is English (or plays in the EPL) everyone drools all over the prospect.

The prospect of Hassler, or Moeller, or Balakov coming were essentially dismissed to to their age/injury problems. That's fine, but the same could be easily said for Sheringham too.

Pardon me, but I'm just sick of the blind Anglophilia around these parts.

Chill man! First of all, when have I bashed Hassler, Moeller (who I would drool over as well), or Balakov? All fine senior internatioals who would be great crowd draws, fine examples for the younger players and could probably score quite a few goals.

Of all of these and Teddy, I would rank Moeller and Sheringham as two players of "ageless" talent; much like Hristo, but without the attitude.

But it's all just mastrubation guys and gals. Because it takes a special, rare kind of individual to come over here and contribute Stoichkov-style as opposed to Matthaus-style, which I assume we could all agree to do without.

Now relax Liam. I'll buy you a nice whiskey on Saturday to keep you warm and toasty during the lashing rainstorms.

    Dear Peter Wilt,

Please sign Teddy Sheringham. He would be a wonderful addition to your squad. Please don't be fooled by his age or his glacial pace. He's got skills that never fade.

    Sincerely,
The current holders of the Brimstone Cup

Aw, it's a dirty Dallas trick!

I was thinking critically about this before, but now I'm thinking we need this "Teddy."

But wait, what if it's a doublecross, or a triplecross?

    Damn these sneaky Texans.

If we get any foreign player, I hope that he is a player that can create things individually. I don't think Sheringham is that kind of player. A fine goal poacher, sure, but not individually creative. That's my reason for not wanting Teddy (besides the fact that I really don't want someone named Teddy on the team).

That's flagrant disrespect toward a man that I have come to revere. Regardless of what cups you hold, please take your mal-formed and maligning posts elsewhere. Mr. Wilt, we support you.

My second point: Why is there such a fuss over picking up older, foreign players? I realize that many of the above-mentioned people have the skills that it takes to dominate MLS for a year or two more, and they also would be good for tutoring the younger players. But shouldn't there be more of a focus on signing talented young players that have the potential to remain with the team for a long time? Or is it just a far-fetched dream to think that any developing player with talent will stay in the MLS and not run off to Europe? I suppose we could continually sign a new team each year composed of veterans with one year left in them and kids that are too young to be of interest in Europe, but it's kind of sad to think that a large part of MLS strategy is to pick up European left-overs rather than develop new American talent.

Anyway, Freddy Adu for the Fire in aut five!

I agree in principal, but I think some of the disjointed -- sometimes ugly -- play in MLS this season is due to a lack of veterans in midfield. Most teams got a veteran playmaker at the start. Valderrama in Tampa, Donadoni in NY, Etchevarry in Washington, Cienfuegos in LA, Preki in KC, Peter Nowak in Chicago etc.

Others like NE and SJ didn't and sucked for a few years as a result. Since these initial foreign signings, the league has gone young (Vaca) or simply not as good (John Wilmar Perez).

I think these older players helped make the games flow better, and sped up the development of young Americans. Martino is the first young American to take the playmaker role, with hopefully more to follow, but it might be awhile.

Unitl the league quadruples the salary cap, it will be a mixture of older foreigners and ultra-young American hopefuls surrounded by solid if not spectacular role players.

Why don't we go after Dennis Irwin while we're at it!?! Just kidding.

I'm not sure Sherringham would be a good fit for the Fire.

However, upon hearing that his contract wouldn't be renewed, I thought he was the kind of player who would be atractive to MLS.

He's old, but has retained his skills. He's looking to get into coaching. He sounds just like the type of veteran player who could contribute to MLS.

Yeah because Brahma knows the Fire have the tons of salary cap space that would be needed to sign him. With all our unused cap space, I'm amazed we haven't signed Zidane or Rivaldo yet.
