since when has owen's form made the slightest difference to his selection? we all know that owen, scholes, beckham and gerrard are guaranteed starting places regardless of how bad they are playing. team selection policy like this may explain the recent 'performances'.

i thought he would. we had this before the world cup, i recall; newspapers twisting 'i miss playing for england' to mean 'i want to make myself available for selection again'. i'm surprised the observer would stoop so low to get a story.
Shearer I would have loved to have seen him and owen again up front we've missed him since he retired from international football. But apparently he has said he's not going to make a comeback so its pointless going on about it.
Have we missed him since his retirement? I mean, really? When he left, he was two years overdue, his last properly superior performance in an England shirt came .... christ, I can't even remember. France 98? With him as their central focus, England were tedious, predictable, one-dimensional and ineffective. Keegan didn't help, of course ("Paul? Dennis? You busy this summer?") but nonetheless, Shearer had become a stagnant force in a stagnant team. Just for the record, in the 28 games England have played since his retirement, they have scored 46 goals. So it's not like we're suffering in his absence in that respect. And for another consideration, comparisons between newcastle and England are disingenious. The Newcastle team is built around Shearer in a way that England cannot and should not ever be.
And Gary Neville It should also be noted that, according the one of the sunday papers, Englands record in the 28 games since Shearer retired has been one draw better than the 28 games before.
