He'd be a GREAT compliment to Owen. They'd play in much the same way he and Bellamy do on club level.

Shearer retired after Euro 2000 because the year-round play was causing him to be less effective. My guess is that he'd love to help out if he didn't have to be captain again.

Does anyone think he will actually be returning for England, or is this just media hype? Shearer and Owen would be a great partnership though.

Yes, as nufc.com points out, those worthless tabloids (even the broadsheets got caught) only took the first portion of the interview. They didn't point out that Shearer said retiring from the national team was beneficial for his career. Frankly, he has no reason to say anything else.

I for one would like to have heard this from Shearer:

"I'll play for England once I bring a championship home to the Toon."

Either way, we mags come out on top of that deal. :)

How old is he? If I recall correctly, he's about 32 - not all that old in my opinion.

He can obviously still get the job done, but at what expense to his club career and longevity? At what expense to establishing a foundation with the national side that has more than a two-year outlook? Personally, my thoughts are that you win now and don't worry about three years from now when it comes to selecting your side for competitive matches. Friendlies, youth national teams and training camps are where you do the work bringing in new talent and laying the foundation for the future.

I think he could obviously contribute in this European Championship cycle, but how about all the way to Germany 2006? Is that pushing it?

I'm planning to go to some games at Euro 2004 and would love to see him there.
