Back from Europe to take America by storm, Steve Shak has joined the Virginia Beach Mariners. Anyone have specifics details why he's back? I can't imagine a former number 1 draft pick couldn't hack in in the Swedish second division. http://a-league.com/news/2004/news,2004,0171.shtml
Uh, yeah, that's pretty much the problem. Dandal has been kind enough to detail his travails with Bodens BK here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=107209
I'm not trying to diss the guy here, but the first time I saw him play at The Swamp I was in shock. I went right into one of those, "If this guy is a number one draft pick get me a pair of boots dammit!" He has very little ability. Period. Terrible reader of the game, almost no ball skills, undersized for a central defender, terrible passer.... Like I said I don't want to bash, but the question begs - How the hell did a guy like this get rated so highly? A League ability at best, and I mena at best, and not a standout either, and easily replaceable. MLS's Ryan Leaf.
This being Yanks Abroad, we post news about players who are overseas or, in fact, abroad, regardless of their playing ability. Thus, Steve Shak qualifies.
Others seem mad, but I find this hysterical. Still trying think up a clever Shaq, rapping, Kazaam comment.
"Defender Steve Shak was taken by the New York/New Jersey Metrostars with the first pick overall and was the first of five Bruins selected in the first three rounds of the draft. Shak will be coached by family friend Octavio Zambrano. "I've known Steve since he was 15," Zambrano said. "I coached him. I know how good he was then and how good he has become. His pedigree for soccer is very good." http://www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/db/issues/00/02.10/sports.msoccer.note.html
Yes, yes, it was zambrano. Here's a funny little quote from NYT: Even though Shak was not rated very high by several people in the league, MetroStars Coach Octavio Zambrano raved about him. ''We got our man,'' Zambrano said. ''He's a sure thing. We can never go wrong with him. We knew from the very beginning that Shak was our choice.'' And a little diddy from Nick which, for anyone who follows the Metros, will ring so familiar, and so hollow, that it's actually kind of funny: ''We have in the works two major announcements that will solve our problems up front,'' Sakiewicz said. ''The general crop of this draft was defenders and we solidified our defensive situation." Ah, it's so easy to be a Metros cynic. So, so easy.
