My guess is that no american player will be good enough to be featured in a Nike 'cage tournament-esque' commercial in the eve of WC 2006. And don't come with that Freddy Adu talk. He will not play in Germany' 06.
Curious. I didn't realize that being in a commercial is commensurate with one's talents, or else I would've gone into show business.
By then we should have a lot more players in Europe, hopefully Mathis and Donavan being stars. I don't think any of out players are flashy enough, or have the plain natural skill as all of those players featured in the cage last time. Donovan is all speed, and you dont need speed in a cage match(running speed anyways)...Davids would run them all in circles . It would be great to see one, though.
Nike isn't going to bring back the cage tournament, they'll come up with something new, but you can bet that this time around an American player will be involved. The obvious answer is Donovan, he's our best and most recognizable player plus he's sponsored by Nike.
Yup, Donovan is Nike's biggest, most recognizable American star. Remember he was in that commercial where he was juggling a ball in the park. Hopefully he will appear in Nike's next soccer ad campaign.
Don't particularly care. Being in the 2002 WC Commercial didn't help Figo much when DaMarcus Beasley was running circles around him en route to a US victory. Final commercial tally 2002: France - 4 MLS - 0 Final goal tally 2002: MLS - 5 France - 0
First, we will see in time whether you are right or not. I don't know whether or not he will play, but I wouldn't rule it out. Second, as noted in other posts in this thread, whether he plays or not doesn't necessarily mean a thing about whether he'll be in this or other commercials.
and brazil had it's own commercial in 98 and got runner-up, in the cage series they had 4 players i think and won the WC. so don't just list the stats that TRY to make the US look better cuz all of this is irrelevant. the question is whether someone will be a big enough star to make it in a commercial. i say no.
We have the Sports Illustrated cover! Wait, hold on a sec...ooh, bad example... Seriously, are you people actually taking this for real or has this not been uncovered already for what it is, flamebait? I like the real stat: USA - World Cup quarterfinalists. Don't try to demonstrate that doesn't mean anything by arbitrarily raising the bar. Commercial? I'm trying not to laugh.
Re: Re: Seriously, which Yank player have a chance to be in a pre-WC 2006 Nike commercial?? Nike did regional marketing before. They put Joe-Max Moore in Thomas Brolin's place in the Devil commercial for the American version. Someone else were in it for the Asian version and so on. Donovan will be somewhere if soccer grows in America. The Europeans just will not see him in their version.
Landon is Nike's biggest star on the US soccer team. The most recognizible American soccer player in Europe, Brad Friedel, won't be in any Nike commercials because he wears adidas. Friedel would be the only American soccer player who could ever be in a commericial in Europe without people complaining about it.
Re: Re: Re: Seriously, which Yank player have a chance to be in a pre-WC 2006 Nike commercial?? Donovan could be in the international version of a Nike commercial by 2006. After all that Korean guy was in the cage tournament commercial, and a number of American players in 2002 were better than him.
Who the hell cares? Those Nike commercials are trash. Nobody on the U.S. has a lot of "individual" skill compared to Ronaldo, Figo, or Davids. We play well as a team, and fight all game long. Nike only shows flashy moves and individual skill. We don't need to be on a ****************** Nike commercial to be a good team.
Actually I was thinking the other day that I can't remember seeing very many Nike commercials at all lately, at least none that promoted an individual player. There is the streaker commercial and the soccer game in the ship commercial, but other than that? It seemed like when Jordan was in his heyday there was an Air Jordan commercial every 15 minutes. My point here is that I've never seen a Landon Donovan commercial on TV and I'm not sure we will ever see Freddy Adu commercial either (blasphemy!). I get the impression that Nike saves it's wad for the transcendent athletes like MJ and Tiger Woods. You saw some early commitment to Ronaldo but that faded with his injury. Since Ronaldo I can't think of an individual player that Nike has really played up, and I don't think we will see Nike devote serious atttention to any one player until another one comes along who is clearly above everyone else.
The issue is that all those flashy skills and individual talents are what make the game beautiful and attract so many people.
If I were a dumbass like you I would be more attracted to team cohesion than actual talent and skill, that is.
I miss that comercial now...we need more cool comercials. Donovan or Howard would be my guess. Maybe DeMarcus if some euro squad signs him. But let's not forget about the most succesful Yank this season, John O'Brien...
They are available at Kazaa for download. I think that Nike would call for the international campaign only the players that, adding to the obvious flair and skill, are easy recognizable faces worldwide. Remember that these campaigns are advertised not only in Europe, but in Latin America, Asia and Africa. You have to be a die-hard soccer follower to know who Donovan, Mathis and McBride are, and I doubt the average russian, indian, chinese or bolivian know them.
Iwas in Kiev after world cup and many people over there knew about Donovan and Freidel. They even had a front page article re: the US team and it's stars. fwiw
Team cohesion trumps "actual" skill on any day of the week. Beautiful or ugly, it wins games, and that's all that really matters to the lot of us.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Seriously, which Yank player have a chance to be in a pre-WC 2006 Nike commercial?? The Korean guy in the cage is Nakata of Japan. he happened to one of the highest earners in soccer because of the vast market in Japan and Asia. The US is the biggest market for almost everythinhg.... soccer just happens not one of them. By 2006, if the soccer market in the US expands, Nike would put any American player on their commercial.
Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Seriously, which Yank player have a chance to be in a pre-WC 2006 Nike commercia No, there was a Korean guy too named Seol.
