I attended a referee meeting last night and I am excited about getting my high school certification for the first time. However, I am curious as to just how and why the NFHS decided that they could come up with a better system than the boys at FIFA?

Particularly, the signals by the ref. The video they showed detailing all of the signals brought the house down in laughter. Doesn't this tend to impede the refs ability to keep up with play on a quick restart when he is giving these signals?Particularly tripping or kicking, you can't give that signal and be jogging after the play.

Is their anyone on this forum who has any access to the NFHS inner circle? Any members on their ref committee?

I will be faithfully abiding by the NFHS procedures, but any insight as to how High School soccer got to this point would be appreciated.

And if this subject has already been covered ad nauseum, please forgive me.

    Because they're on crack. ;)

Actually, I don't know the answer. But, my best guess is that the people originally involved in soccer officiating 20 or 30 years ago were also officials in other high school sports like football and basketball. So they thought they'd try to "improve" the game with adaptations from other sports.

    Rediculously far nor
The signals are not required when not practical. I was as violently opposed to the point that I disregarded Michigan State HS directives which have always called for signal use even though the rest of the country did not.
After giving in and trying them a few times, I like them.....alot. I dont use them when I am in a hurry or the call is obvious but players and coaches alike appreciate thier use....It doesnt cause any harm and I think it aids my game control.

    I'm no fan

I think they stem from the philosophy that NFHS has about sports at the high school level. Sports are conducted in a teaching atmosphere. Signals are deemed to help fans, player and coaches learn and understand the game better. I use them, mainly because I'm required to. I have noticed on a couple of occasions that some players who regularly say "Hey ref, what was the call?" don't say it. Maybe it was because of the signal or maybe not, I don't know. I do know that fans still don't have a clue. The only signal they get is offside, because it's the same in football. Even tripping and handling signals bring a quizzical look, even though they're fairly self explanatory. Try dangerous play if you really want a puzzled look from everyone! They're only mandatory if you have time. Forget 'em if you have to hussle for position, especially tripping, or you'll be tripping yourself! I can live with them or without them, not a big deal.
