Yeah, so just to add, that Roberto Baggio, who helped Vicenza to promotion from Serie C1 to Serie B, was awarded, as mentioned, the best player in his division for the 1984-85 campaign through Guerin Sportivo’s awards. He was mostly 17 years old in that season, but received the award at the age of 18. In other words, he was considered prodigious at an early stage. From this point on he was acquired from Fiorentina to the first division, skipping Serie B. For Italian standards, Serie C1 and C2 were considered virtually professional leagues that competed against Serie A and B teams at the Coppa Italia. GS highly regarded these divisions and proudly included players in their annual awards.
AC Milan vs Udinese was postponed for this round due to Milan’s Intercontinental match against São Paulo.

So i just bought on eBay this 1994 book from Guerin Sportivo. There is a 32-page special for every World Cup from 1930 to 1990, with reports, scores and everything you need to know regarding a WC edition, including the profile of the WC winners and of the top scorer in detail. Also, there is a 200-page special on the 1994 World Cup teams, with their history, past results, road to USA 94 and a Best-11 team of all-time. This is the Guerin Sportivo All-Time for Brazil in 1994. BRAZIL ALL-TIME (1994 by Guerin Sportivo) Gilmar Bellini - Luis Pereira - Djalma Santos - Nilton Santos Falcao - Didi Garrincha - Leonidas - Pele - Rivelino
So apparently Zico didnt earn a spot in the best 11 for GS. Those are the Best-11 for ARGENTINA ARGENTINA ALL-TIME (1994 from Guerin Sportivo) Fillol Perfumo - Passarella - Ruggeri - Marzolini N.Rossi - Moreno - Maradona Di Stefano - Ferreyra - Kempes
This is Italy All-Time team according to GS in 1994 ITALY ALL-TIME TEAM (Guerin Sportivo, 1994) Zoff Gentile - Scirea - Parola - Cabrini Tardelli - Meazza - Rivera Conti - Rossi - Riva
Excellent work, mate. How about other National teams, like Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Russia, etc ? England, Uruguay and France were probably not included because they did not qualify to WC94.
Interesting that even by 1994, Baresi wasn't included in the all-time team yet, let alone a younger player like Maldini. Honestly, I've never even seen Parola in such a team before, so that's a good new name. I do wonder if the 1982 cohort is over-represented, but I'm not surprised and understand why that might be the case.
Yes the biggest surprise for me is the Baresi absence, and also that Zico was not included in the Brazil team.
Just to info mate, since you probably haven't followed this thread all the way, I can confirm that if you do a search for posts on it containing 'Liedholm' you should be able to find teams he selected: XIs for his time as player and his time as coach in 1987 and then All-Time Italian XI and All-Time Rest of the World XI in 1988 I think it was. Parola is included in the XI for his time as player, but not his all-time Italian one (but Baresi is interestingly already in that; I guess it was not so uncommon in late 80s or certainly early 90 for Baresi to be considered as an All-Time World XI candidate but for some Italians to still go with Scirea as libero behind another centre-back in All-Time Italy selections). Parola also got a vote or two in a poll in 1981 on Puck's 'Placar' thread you can find on his profile if I remember correctly. It was probably at that point he came to my attention, like he is coming to yours now. Actually I kind of thought afterwards I'd rather have put him in my 'Italy Reserves' squad in that AT World Cup game we did, rather than Rosato (a bit like maybe I thought I could have put in Sandor in Hungary's squad rather than Budai; of course I've not seen much footgage of Sandor and even less of Parola so I'm just going on what I've read mainly). Actually though it was Rosato that took the CB slot in Liedholm's All-Time Italy anyway (as well as a place in his XI from his time as coach).
That should have said "just for info...." which will be what I'd have typed originally I'm pretty sure, but anyway I meant to search for posts containing Liedholm on this thread only of course (it was quicker/better to advise that rather than re-posting or linking the posts I referred to I thought this time). This link should do it if copied into the search box actually I think: liedholm thread:2085771
But maybe it is more helpful (since I can identify the relevant posts easy enough) for me to go further and just post them... Here they are then!
Best XI for Netherlands NETHERLANDS ALL-TIME BEST XI (Guerin Sportivo, 1994) Jongbloed Suurbier - Haan - Hulshoff - Krol Rijkaard - Neeskens - Cruijff - Gullit Rensenbrink - Van Basten
Best XI for Spain SPAIN ALL-TIME BEST XI (Guerin Sportivo, 1994) Zamora Camacho - Pirri - Gonzalvo - Quincoces Amancio - Samitier - Suarez Basora - Gento - Zarra
Just going back to this again I think one interesting thing to note is that overall Liedholm doesn't really significantly favour picking older or newer players intrinsically (or due to strong bias or whatever) it seems, but he really seems to feel and indicate that the best of Italy's players on the whole came from after his playing days (even though as schwuppe showed elsewhere, linked by Puck in this thread also, he picked Piola as best overall Italian he'd seen in one selection despite his absence from the XI above; and even though he picks a good number of 1960s Italians in comparison to modern ones and in the XI from his time as player worldwide he only has one less Italian than in his XI from his time as coach). On the other hand he seems to feel that for the rest of the world (and even for Serie A players as also shown on that post by schwuppe I think, so maybe there can be some hint of nostalgia or suggestions of over-rating his own era still) that a good number of players from his playing days remained unsurpassed and worth a place in his XI (even though he was certainly prepared to go modern with some selections in his 'time as coach' XI, with plenty of current/recent players in that one and arguably only those two Italians as predominantly 60s players). Anyway, great work @MJWizards - I'd still be interested to see other selections to be honest (maybe not ones such as Saudi Arabia, the USA, Morocco or Bolivia quite so much - I don't want to request you take the time to put all of them up lol but certainly I'd like to see various others you haven't posted yet). I don't know what I can offer in return lol - maybe check my thread history and you can find the votes by players for France Football's Player of the Century if you like and you'd not seen them before!
Liedholm gave this selection in 1984: In 1984 they asked Nils Liedholm to name the 10 greatest foreigners to play in Italy 1) Nordahl 2) Gren 3) Schiaffino 4) Sivori 5) J. Hansen 6) Julinho 7) Wilkes 8) Falcao 9) Cerezo 10) Zico https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/old-great-players-lists-esp-1950s-1970s.2038892/page-9 Longevity in the league was a factor.
Yeah, that's the one thanks Puck. @MJWizards - it's again better for me to post that thread I mentioned myself I think, so here it is in case you were interested indeed (the France Football Player of the Century voting): https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/france-football-player-of-the-century-who-voted-for-who.1597402/
