I’ll soon make a recap about the 1992/93 season with the final results of the top players, but before that GS made an interesting observation of how Serie A was going into a declining trend. The pinnacle of the quality of Serie A was recorded to be in the 1980s with the 1984/85 season reaching its highest peak. The method of GS of reaching this conclusion was to average out the average of all teams from 1976-1993, ever since players started to be rated. Now there can be a reason behind this decline. It started from 1988/89, once the expansion took effect of adding 2 extra teams into Serie A. It went from originally 16 teams, to later 18. This expansion possibly brought some degradation due to cannon fodder teams being included in the top flight of Italian football.
The recap of the 1992/93 season produced some outstanding offensive players, with goalscoring rising after the back-rule pass had been eliminated by FIFA. Halfway through the campaign, Adalberto Bortolotti’s Top 10 “Hit Parade” returned after several years of absence. According to him the top 3 podium players of the season were Italians: Signori, R. Baggio and Paolo Maldini. 1.) Signori was the best, registering 26 goals with the highest average goal per game since the 1960s. A rather late bloomer, mostly spent his first half of his career in Serie B, now with 25 years of age he was the best offensive player with Roberto Baggio in Italian football. In the average GS that comprised of all 4 major Italian sports papers, Signori was also the best rated with an average of 6,69. 2.) Roberto Baggio came in second place. This was undoubtedly his best season so far for Juventus. It was considered a resurrection year after previous disappointing seasons. In his most prolific season, with 21 goals, he was at the zenith of his career and considered an authentic fuoriclasse. 3.) Paolo Maldini finished in 3rd place and was considered the true heir to Facchetti and Cabrini. An authentic athlete, that maintained a top level as the fundamental important player for AC Milan. Ruben Sosa and Faustino Asprilla finished in the top 5 and were the best foreigners, according to Bortolotti. The 3 worst players this season were Pancev, Vialli and Lentini. The GS top 10 best rated below with the top best per position. Top 3 1. Signori 6,69 2. Dell’Anno 6,67 3. Matteoli 6,64 Top 3 foreigners 1. Ruben Sosa 6,58 2. Aron Winter 6,51 3. Abel Balbo 6,48
