I don't want to sound too biased or make the 'latin alliance voting' accusation but I'd challenge that perception mate. ("Franco Baresi viewed generally as the main artífice") (bloc voting also gave Belanov the win in 1986) Van Basten won both the Ballon d'Or as well as the World Player of the Year vote (in 1989, from 1991 onward under the flag of FIFA). He won the Onze d'Or, was 2nd in the World Soccer vote (behind Gullit, strangely), UEFA designated him as player of the year. Different groups of people in Europe and the world - journalists, coaches, readers - voted him on top. He scored a number of goals (10 goals) that hadn't been seen since the early 1960s, and the average level of opponents was much stronger as 1993-94 for instance (with Monaco, Werder Bremen finishing mid-table in their own league). The European Cup was a competition that not only Italians followed closely, in particular the quarter finals onward. In a review on the Ballon d'Or the magazine Guerin Sportivo wrote in 2005: "He says: a prize that goes to Belanov in 1986 and not to Maradona can not be serious. You want to explain that by regulation, until 1995, the Pibe de oro the Golden Ball could not win it. In the imaginary the gold book remains imprinted and when there not some big names appear, doubts increase. We distinguish: from 1995 on, really sure that the Sammer of '96 was superior to Ronaldo, awarded by the coaches with the Fifa World Player of the Year? And before, was it possible that we could not reward Kubala and Puskas, two of the strongest of every age? Less shared, perhaps, the findings on the failure of Baresi (especially in 89 or in 1994). Not that his class does not deserve it, mind you, but often some biased or superficial critique forgets that the second Kaiser Franz of European football has had a career that is not irreproachable in terms of fair play, a voice expressly mentioned in the regulation of the prize. It is a survey that certainly does not concern the immense Scirea, regularly neglected by the jurors of France Football. In addition, and in this the speech can be extended to Maldini, Baresi has been penalized by his role as a defender and, paradoxically, by the greatness of a team that contained Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard. If it can be of consolation, the last two rossoneri captains are in good company: if they have not won goalkeepers like Banks and Zoff, full-backs like Roberto Carlos and Krol (then also a splendid libero) or central like Moore, strikers like Riva and Sandrino Mazzola, Greaves and Dalglish, Butraguerio and Fontaine, Rahn and Seeler, universals like Breitner, Neeskens and Tardelli, wings like Gento, Keizer, Rensenbrink and Giggs, the panzer Netzer or birds like Conti, Hamrin and Sekularac better need a reason. The Golden Ball is like life: too important to take it seriously." https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/the-ballon-dor-revised-france-football-2015.2089344/#post-37331279 Also: Guerin Sportivo in 1999 (edited by Bortolotti, a journalist following football since the 1940s) placed MvB 19 places higher as the next team mate (Maldini) and 27 places higher than Baresi. He was the best placed player of his era. This list is on RSSF website. Gazzetta dello Sport in 2006 did a survey among their own journalists: https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Estero/Primo_Piano/2006/04_Aprile/19/Sondaggio.shtml https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Estero/Primo_Piano/2006/04_Aprile/21/classifica sondaggio.shtml ... and when Gazzetta dello Sport wondered in 2009 who was the best of the decade, they had him as #3 of the 1980s (again comfortably ahead of team-mates - big Serie A bias there) http://feeds.folha.uol.com.br/fsp/esporte/fk1501200922.htm Now it can be over time a different perception has grown (but again: he won both the BdO and WPotY) but think as well MvB his influence on the results (both per naked data and advanced metrics as GoalImpact) was much more pronounced too. Baresi was technically a fantastic player, who nevertheless very rarely had a goal or assist (for a defender), arguably the best defender of his time, but Milan was generally fine without him (in scorelines and results). Including 4-0 wins over Napoli and winning against Barcelona in the 1989 year without Baresi. His impact on the scorelines and wins was simply not as pronounced as a Rijkaard, Platini, Van Basten (and those were legit 'big game' scorers per Corbett and Delanay their attempts). He was the second foreigner to be included in the Italian Football Hall of Fame. Sacchi himself said his team - improving to one of the best teams in Europe - wouldn't have been possible without the three tulips and said in more concealed words to World Soccer in 1992, as Italy national team manager: "As a club coach I was in charge of 60 to 70 important games a season. As national coach it is eight to ten, maximum. That's the biggest difference. But the objectives are still the same, to play well. A club coach can use his players 300 days a year. He has to worry about the physical, athletic, technical and psychological aspects of the game. At national level I have only 56 days a year, so I have to concentrate on just one aspect of play - the tactical development. I must co-ordinate the movement of the whole team." "I base all my work on the skill and tactics rather than the day-to-day organisation which you get at club level. And the more time I get with my players, the better my team will become. Now UEFA says each federation should interrupt the championship at least six times a season for the national team. This will me enable me to produce such a high level of football that it will be beautiful for the sport." "My dream and the dream of Milan [directorate] was to have a side totally comprised of Italian players. But that is very difficult in Italy because there are six or seven clubs who will not sell their players to anyone. So you [me] are forced to enter the foreign market. These imports have been extremely useful to me because their experience, knowledge, skill and resilience are a source of great information. They produce different ways of playing, and the Italian players improve because they have to make an effort to match that level of excellence." Article from Gazzetta dello Sport when he turned 50: https://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Seri...co-motivi-che-ne-fanno-mito-90897841816.shtml If you look at the defenders who played against him, like Vierchowod, Kohler or Bergomi - or the long-time reserve goalkeeper of Juventus (with pitch-side view) they say the same thing: ranking him as the best or 2nd best they played against: http://archiviostorico.gazzetta.it/...rchowod_non_finisce_mai_ga_0_9809088644.shtml http://archiviostorico.gazzetta.it/1999/luglio/30/BEPPE_BERGOMI_gm_0_9907301702.shtml https://www.volkskrant.nl/sport/ik-gun-van-basten-zelfs-de-wereldtitel~b23f6fd9/ https://ru.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/news/amp/newsid=23031.html https://www.trouw.nl/nieuws/kohler-ontleent-status-aan-van-basten~b3a01d78/?referer=https://www.google.com/ http://archiviostorico.gazzetta.it/...ette_parato_per_passione_ga_0_020503457.shtml

This time Maradona relinquished his crown as top rated foreigner, paving way to the German Brehme. The GS winners since 1980: The 1988-89 top 5 Brehme 6,73 Dunga 6,68 Junior 6,64 Careca 6,54 Prytz 6,52 This time Maradona dropped to joint-top 7th position with Voller, falling out from the top 5 for the first time in his career in Italian football.
