In his post game presser, Berhalter said "there's a lot of work to be done". Unfortunately, that is exactly what Dest was looking for.
Dest’s ejection led to the best club form of his career. He appears to be working on both his individual defense and his final ball, which have both been excellent at PSV. It should be interesting to see him when he gets back with the national team, where he has typically outperformed his club performances.
Funny how these things work. When Tillman overslept there was an outcry. Bozs meted out a one-game punishment and put him back in there the next match and Tillman has become a big part of the team.
“The coach said, ‘If I was that defender, I’d have broken your legs.’"I said, ‘Yeah but it was a good cross right?’"Sergino Dest is a USMNT and PSV full-back who loves rabonas, elasticos and bringing joy to soccer. This is Sergino Dest, in his words. @easportsfc— The Athletic | Football (@TheAthleticFC) September 27, 2024 We miss him. And probably we’re learning to appreciate him. What a unique creative player (who makes an entire half of our build-out nicely press-resistant.)
He's arguably our best player next to Pulisic, though Tyler and Antonee have an argument for that as well.
He is also arguably one of the most irreplaceable players we have. The team is just not the same w/o him. IMO, the same can be said for Tyler and certainly would be for CP. Just mind-boggling how many of our best USMNT players can't stay healthy. It can't be coincidence.
I think it's because we were so barren of talent that the young talent got pushed ahead of normal development and over used before maturing. I expect a study and change like in baseball where high school and college pitchers were so overworked they blew their arms out before or early in pro careers. There will become a tight monitoring of minutes in practice and games from academies with a recommended number for each age group. I'll add like head injuries and protocols became normal practice.
You want the Fire Poch thread? https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/fire-pochettino-thread.2132111/page-34#post-42958466
Poch about to look like a genius who fixed our heart, grit, balance, cohesion and possession with purpose problems, all because the difference between Dest and AR vs Scally and random warm body is just that vast.
But he was contacted by an assistant. Maybe Poch doesn't stay in close contact with any if the players and delegates that responsibility to his assistants. This is a nothing burger.
Yeah right its a nothing burger. One of the top players in the program and your the manager and you dont at least make contact personal contact. That really will make you want to run through walls for him.(insert sarcasm here) More it speaks to not giving a shit. He too busy watching his boyhood team play and watching the IMSpeed charity match. Dude lives in England a very short trip to go and see him with the expense account he probably has.
I guess I don't see it as big of a deal as others do. I think we're just accustomed to the USMNT manager staying in regular contact with players because of past precedent, but it doesn't mean it's a necessity, and it definitely isn't the norm around the world. Different managers have different approaches, and it may actually be a healthy evolution for U.S. players to not expect the national team manager to regularly reach out to them.
Do we imagine Dest waiting by the phone on a Friday night, afraid to go out with his friends because he might miss a call from Poch? Did he try to call Poch himself, only to hear from Poch's mom that he couldn't come to the phone because he was washing his hair?
I imagine Poch taking in a game and maybe going for dinner or coffee and discussing how he plans to use him in his system. "I guess I don't see it as big of a deal as others do. I think we're just accustomed to the USMNT manager staying in regular contact with players because of past precedent, but it doesn't mean it's a necessity, and it definitely isn't the norm around the world. Different managers have different approaches, and it may actually be a healthy evolution for U.S. players to not expect the national team manager to regularly reach out to them." When you couple his not contacting Dest with also not contacting Nene Brown and you add into the mix the total disaster the last window was you begin to question Poch commitment to the program..
