Well same for McKennie as he can get a big paycheck staying at Juventus then it's up to them whether they'd rather pay him that much and not use him at all.

Yeah but Venezia will still play Tessmann a ton if he doesn’t get sold whereas McKennie will basically be in purgatory if he sticks around.

Could be but didn't McKennie start off last year the same? No place, no locker, practicing on his own? I think he's one of those players that grow on coaches quickly once they se him at practice every day.

Was he practicing on his own at the start last year?

Yeah but this year is different as Juventus seem much more determined to push him out, and last year Juventus had some unexpected things happen like Pogba getting suspended that opened the door for him that’s not likely to reoccur.

If Varas coaches, wonder if he shows some preference for former FC Dallas players. He's coached Tessman, Bryan Reynolds, and Pepi at FC Dallas as assistant coach. But Tessman unlikely to be called in, especially since he missed all of preseason. Don't think he'll bring back Ferreira though.

He didn't show any deferential treatment to FCD players as the U20 coach................

    I don't think its really a consideration.

If true, I’d say, let this be a true fringe player call up window. Let the A team players settle in with their clubs in Europe, and give the fringe guys a chance to shine.

GK Roman Celentano, Matt Freese, Diego Kochen
    RB Marlon Fossey, Bryan Reynolds
    CB Cameron Carter-Vickers, Walker Zimmerman
CB Auston Trusty, James Sands, Noahkai Banks
LB Kevin Paredes, John Tolkin, Jonathan Gomez
    M6 Lennard Maloney, Aidan Morris
M8 Luca de la Torre, Cole Bassett
    10 Malik Tillman, Rokas Puktsas
RW Griffin Yow, Richie Ledezma, Cole Campbell
    LW Paxten Aaronson, Diego Luna
FW Josh Sargent, Haji Wright, Brandon Vazquez

At this point, this window would simply be an opportunity to showcase that you can perhaps replace one of the players who were at the Copa America.

Banks, Campbell, and Kochen are just there as an introduction. We need a new goalkeeper. We need center backs. We need wingers. If these three can break out this year, it would be huge for the program.

I thought about calling in Schulte, but decided to let him stick with the Crew since he already missed a lot of time with them and I want to see want Freese and/or Celentano can do.

Fossey and Reynolds should get a shot. And we need to explore our right back depth. Major priority in this window.

Ledezma might be a late, hey let’s see what you can do call up.

Since Tessmann is in club purgatory, let him figure that out, and let’s see what Aidan Morris and Rokas Puktsas can do since they had to miss the Olympics.

De la Torre could play more of a leadership role…. Especially since he’s going to need to level up his game to stay relevant.

Sargent and Wright should get more of a look. Vazquez should be there. I wanted to squeeze in Pefok (or Downs or Kahveh), but couldn’t make room.

Yow and Pax A. could use this as an opportunity to level up.

Paredes has been at Wolfsburg long enough to accept a call.

Tolkin is there to see if he can back up Jedi.

Gomez is there to keep him in the program and throw him a bone…. Bello, Lund, and Brown were also considered. Wiley wasn’t since he’s new to his club. Jones could also be considered.

CCV, Trusty, and Zimmerman should get minutes.

    Maloney deserves a legit look.

Bassett and Luna are my probably should have been at the Olympics call ups. I thought about Cade Cowell. But space is limited.

I want to give Malik at least one window where he’s expected to be the guy for us. We need the PSV version of Malik. We haven’t found that yet.

Finally, I probably wouldn’t mess with the formation and tactics if this is a weird window.

I would be good w/ the overall idea. But a couple players to add/subtract:

+ Neal (CB), Jones (FB), Tsakiris or McGlynn (M)
    - CCV (CB), Gomez (FB), LDLT (M)

Count me as somebody who thinks the interim coach isn't going to name an experimental roster for friendlies against Mexico and Canada. A couple of tweaks will be it.

Hi guys, will we be using anti-drone technology in the days before the match to counter Canada's soccer drone force?

Should get USSF to pay the skeet shooting gold (4x in a row!) and silver medal guys to watch out for them for us.

Skeet shooters? We have Patriot missiles. (I mean, protecting the USMNT's closed-door sessions qualifies as national air defense, doesn't it?) ;)

I was thinking about it, and I don't think an interim will be bring a B team. A guy like Varas has ambitions of getting head coaching gig, and I think Hudson and Callaghan got head coaching gigs at least in part because of largely successful interim stints with the USMNT raising their profile. I don't think Varas brings a B team to get smoked by Canada and make himself look like a chump unless he's absolutely forced to do so by Crocker.

That said, I think (like usual) there's room to bring some new guys to complement the A team core.

--We need pretty much open tryouts at CB and GK. You could probably talk me into a half-dozen different guys at each spot. For instance, I don't think Turner, Freese, Schulte is really any less of an A-team than Turner, Horvath, Johnson.

--Backup LB and RB should be open for competition too. If we bring, say, Tolkin and Reynolds instead of Lund and Moore, again, that doesn't seem like any less of an A-team.

--Backup wingers should also be open for competition. I do think Wright and Aaronson contribute something in those roles, but I might look at Paredes and Koleosho instead, if the latter is interested.

--I'd bring Luna in too to make up for the Olympic snub and hopefully keep him on our side. I don't know whether we'd call him a winger or CM, but it doesn't matter for a friendly camp.

So, I think we could bring 7-8 new guys compared to the Copa roster and still call it an A-team.

I'd rather give some minutes to Cole Campbell than Haji Wright. I've seen that I believe to be Wright's ceiling on the wing and it's not high enough.

Put me on team experiment if we get the Interim. Grandpa Dave gave us this in his debut (Caps in (), November, 2017):

    -----------------------------Sapong(2)------------------------
    Agudelo(26)--McKennie(0)--Acosta(16)--Adams(0)
    ----------------------------Williams(22)-----------------------
    Lichaj(13)----Brooks(32)-----Miazga(3)----Yedlin(48)
    -----------------------------Horvath(1)------------------------

    Equivalent would be something like...

    ------------------------Vasquez(8)----------------------------
    Yow(0)--------Luna(1)-------Tillman(12)-----Weah(41)
    -------------------------Johnny(15)-------------------
    Lund(3)-----Trusty(2)-----Richards(21)-----Scally(14)
    ---------------------------Gaga(1)------------------------------

Not saying that's what I'd go with, but something like that.

Interim coach doesn't need to see what kind of leader Puli is.

I’m all for mixing it up a bit but someone like Cole Campbell hasn’t even played a first team game yet. He should not be getting called up to the senior team yet. That would be a case of calling up someone for the sake of it not because they are deserving.

The winger we should be trying to get to this camp is Kolesheo.

Suggesting a hugely experimental side/squad is naive and irrational IMO. It only serves an under-thought, poor BS idea that seems to be suggested in some of the posts in this forum, which is that you increase the chance of finding a "good"/useful player and accelerate their development in some meaningful way by having them get US caps with a bunch of other backups? But player development happens at club level.

How many matches do the US have before they open the US world cup? You bring in these people to play together during these windows because they don't get to do it that often. That doesn't mean there can't be reasonable rotations based on some off-season considerations, like figuring out a transfer or bedding in at a new club.

Campbell will be 20 during the world cup and plays a position of need for us. Could be in 26 what Donovan was for us in 22. I'd call him up and see just how far away he is from being able to help the team. The name you mentioned would be a nice addition to camp as well.

Call him up... when? He's not a senior footballer yet.
How about we call him up after he actually does something?

You must know comparing him to Donovan in any way is ridiculous; 2000 US team was a world and a half away from the 2024 US team. You big silly.

with an interim manager it doesnt matter who they call, its a waste of time.

ill be surprised if we get one full year of productive soccer before the world cup.

Yes and he’s not currently close to the level of senior team. If and when he is he should get a call up but that’s not right now.

If the interim coach wants to call up Cole Campbell, he should go for it.
Varas wanted him for the U20 CONCACAF Championships, but he wasn't released.
This is a FIFA date, so he'd have to be released for this camp. [Same for say, Noahkai Banks of Augsburg. Arguably our best CB prospect.]

We've called up players from Europe before who haven't played first team games yet. If we think they have a USMNT ceiling. It would just be to have them train with the team and get an introduction to what being a USMNT player is about.

I doubt that will happen, though.

We had so many young attacking mifdielders/wingers in the U23 pool that we could have fielded two rosters of them at the Olympics. And that was without Koleosho involved, who we hope will switch. Also without players like Tillman and Reyna, who are U23. Campbell would likely be too far down the list.

To me, this might be the most "establishment" roster we'll pick for the whole cycle. Well, maybe since the Mexico friendly in the spring of 2023 under interim coach Hudson.
