http://lfpress.ca/newsstand/Sports/Soccer/2007/05/13/4176367-sun.html Fifa president Sepp Blatter had a press conference in Toronto yesterday coinciding with the official opening of BMO Field for TFC. Some of the stand-out quotes: On Beckham's impending arrival: On what Blatter thinks MLS as a whole needs to stay strong long-term:
This statement makes no sense at all. The MLS season is pretty much the same length as the season in Europe. Even if he meant to say that they are used to playing fall/winter/spring instead of spring/summer/fall I would think that the MLS schedule would be an advantage for players from the southern hemisphere. They would get to take their summers off in MLS instead of their winters in most other leagues.
Reorganize? This isn't Australia, Sepp. And... um... we kinda, sorta know 'bout the importance of SSS. It sounds like Sepp was handed some bullet points in "preparation" for the TFC event and rattled off what he could remember.
Well in Europe you play August/September to May. Summer is for NT tournaments like the Euro, WC, Copa America, some qualifiers etc... MLS simply plays through these tournaments. So usually as soon as the Euro league seasons end, the top players report to their NTs for these summer tournaments. When MLS season ends, the players don't play another competitive game for 4/5 months.
Yeah, but many Euro leagues take a month off in the winter. There is also a growing effort in Europe to have all of Europe take a month or so off in the winter to play many of the international games that are currently played during the summer.
Why is this guy still in charge of FIFA if everybody knows he's a corrupt moron. I guess it's because he's got guys like Jack Warner of CONCACAF as his sidekicks. Talk about corrupt.
He still hasn't gotten the women to play in tighter, skimpier outfits. Once he accomplishes that, he'll retire.
it's less in length of time. the regular season is from april until october. that's 7 months. the english season runs from august to may. 9 and a half months.
He lost me at "the MLS." Seriously, Blatter's opinion is probably on the level of Jack Warner's in terms of who I'd actually give a rat's ass about.
I don't get his fixation on the calendar. Norway's season runs from April 9th to November 4th this year, while Sweden goes from April 6th through October 28th. MLS runs from April 7 to November 18th. I don't see Blatter complaining about the Tippeligaen or the Allsvenskan.
No one said anything about number of games. It was stated length of season. almost 30 of those games are crammed in mid week. And please.. Dont even mention Chelsea. They are by far not the norm. They are in the FA cup final, and Champions league semi final. Most Teams in say the EPL will play 40 to 42 games a season. Not that far of a stretch from the 37 or so games any team who makes the Playoffs / Open Cup in MLS will play.
EPL has 38 matches and the FA has two various Cup tournaments. Plus 7 teams (not necessarily all from the Premiership) will play in either the Champions League or the UEFA and/or Intertoto Cup. So while Chelsea is on the high end, an average squad is probably in the high 40's. For example, Brad Friedel had played in 53 matches this season for Blackburn, a UEFA Cup participant.
Sepp Blatter should be tried for treason against soccer. Is that possible? him and Jim Rome burned at the same stake?
Hmm, let's see. San Jose Earthquakes, NY Cosmos, USWNT, The girls from Flavor Of Love Charm School...are you sure there's 13?
