I’m just being lazy and bumping this off page 3 in case anyone’s up for updating it. I think we’re all a little lost on how the international slot math is mathing.

The MLS "official" roster page for the Quakes shows 8 intl spots taken, with one of them being Hernán, who's loaned out. That means we're at 7. But for some reason Angus is not listed as an intl. Probably an oversight. DJ and Luka are listed as international, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Then there's the question of how many intl slots we've traded away or acquired. If we need another slot I don't think Bruce would hesitate to cut Adimabua.

We had 1 slot free on opening day, filled the opening with Johnson, and got back the slot we rented out to the Galaxy. So we still have 1 slot to register both Gunn and Jovanović. We’ll pick up at least 1 more slot somehow - question is whether Adimabua sticks around or gets shipped down to play for Covelo. IMG_8787.png

I think someone said that Adimabua is injured. I don’t know how badly but I suppose another option is to say “actually that’s a season ender, Nonso”. Monterey could be an option but although we may enter a partnership with Covelo’s Monterey either formally or informally, he’s gotta want and need the players.

This is where I have the roster right now. As far as I know we are 1 slot over for International Slots.

Costa has been injured, so he hasn't played in 4 months. I hope/expect we'll trade Costa and/or Nonny away to free up a slot or two. Alternatively we have enough GAM to buy like 20 slots from anyone willing to sell at the going rate.

Costa played against Xolos IIRC as a sub. No way will Bruce trade him away. He likes him, and picked up his option in the offseason. He'll figure into our 2nd half mostly as a late sub I hope (no starts please, while Ricketts is healthy).

Adimabua is the obvious candidate to get moved off the roster somehow. I don't think we can trade him - don't think the interest would be there. A USL loan would be the best thing for him and us. Just cutting him would be pretty cold, but that's the business of sports and Bruce would not hesitate to do it.

Sorry to be sleeping on this. We've had a lot of moves. We've added Darius Johnson, Angus Gunn, Luka Jovanovic, and traded Daniel.

We signed Judd, Roberts, Kikanovic, and Ricketts to new contracts.

We got the INT Slot back that we traded to LAG. As noted, we are still one over the limit here.

I need to check player salaries but need to go to work. What else did I miss?

Reminder that the official version of the roster profiles is available here, and should be updated in September after the transfer window closes: https://mlssoccer.app.box.com/s/8rlpwuftshm29fhixg9w08q834j491wp

    Key updates:
    • Darius Johnson takes up an international slot (British / Grenada citizen). Presumably a supplemental roster slot.
    • Daniel (domestic / GC) is gone, and Angus Gunn (UK ENG/SCO) and Jovanovic (AUS/SRB) require international slots, of which the latter still does not have a slot allocated.
    • Jona González is a US citizen and is therefore domestic.
    • Tomo Allen is technically not an "off-roster" player - he only has a Next Pro deal for 2026. The only practical difference is that he can only appear in 4 MLS matchday squads (and play in 2), whereas an off-roster HG (Edwyn, Rohan, KK) can play in 6 matches.
    • IMO it's possible we used some of our surplus GAM to give Judd a nice little bonus as part of his recent contract extension.
    • Roberts is likely in a senior roster slot following the contract extension of Roberts, Ricketts, and Kikanovic.
So once we get Luka sorted out we likely have 1 more senior roster slot to play with. Hopefully we do something with that!

OK, so has Vieira gotten fat and out of shape? I think so. And who’s his backup? Harkes, sort of, Jona actually, but Jona is hurt. Buck maybe, but Buck is shit. Also, Jona at his best is only just acceptable as a backup.

If I could wave a magic wand and spend some of that ~$5M in GAM that we have …

We need a better backup d-mid or two. If for any reason we needed subs for both Vieira and Beau, we’d be screwed. Buck isn’t good enough. Cut him. Jona isn’t good enough, and he’s out right now. Harkes is just barely good enough as a Beau replacement. So more like an 8 than a 6. Nick could sub for Beau once we get Niko back. Nick can also sub for Niko. In another year or two, Nick might be able to take over for the oft injured Niko.

We need a back up for Judd. Luka fills that bill. We should have our eyes on other forwards too, because we can’t count on everyone staying healthy and happy.

Timo is great when he’s on, but is he durable? And how many seasons does he have left in the tank? Our other wide players are:
Bouda, who’s been “off” for ten weeks or so?
Jack - acceptable as a backup.
Marie - acceptable as a backup. He’s also about to age out. Maybe two more seasons?
Darius - acceptable as a backup. Maybe more, but he needs more time with the team.

We could stand to sign a starting quality wide player.

On defense, Costa isn’t good enough. He’s alright, but he’s also getting long of tooth. But! We have Ricketts, and hopefully Dejuan, should he recover well. So maybe we’re OK there? Munie and Roberts are good and pair well together. But Romney is a big drop off and getting old. Floriani may not be good enough. I think we need another CB or two. Benji and Jasinski are fine.

Anus, er, Angus, might be OK, but needs more integration with the team. Earl Jr. sucks, and he’s out injured. What little I’ve seen of Montali gives me hope, but he’s young. We need a better backup GK.

OK, tell me why I’m wrong.

    Go Quakesfans!!

Remember when we were winning every game and there was debate about whether or not we’re actually better off without Espinoza. :facepalm I was always firmly on the “no” on that. I guess the argument was that he made our attack “too predictable” and that he pumped in crosses to “nowhere”. Imagine how much better we’d be with Espinoza bookended with Timo on the other side, an in-form Judd in the middle and Niko behind them.

Any team is better with Espinoza.

Bouda was good enough early, then his form fell off, badly. He’s been playing better lately, but not up to his earlier standard. Giving Jack or Marie a start in place of Bouda light light a fire under his butt.

But really, I think we need to make an upgrade there. Without Niko’s work rate, our short coming are exposed.

And we need two more d-mids!

    Go Quakesfans!!

Bouda really needs to be playing on the left. His best attribute is his shot - he hits it as hard as anyone, and when he’s cutting in from the left he’s dangerous. On the right he’s reduced to playing the Espinoza role, going wide and crossing, and does OK with it but it’s not his forte. The problem is that Timo’s best position is also on the left. If we had Espinoza we could use Bouda to spell Timo on the left. But for now I think we should have Timo and Bouda switch sides occasionally to give the defense a different look. Timo would be dangerous on the right as well, just not as much of a threat to score.

Does Darius play mostly on the left? I know we’ve seen him on the right, but is the left better for him?
