With Wondo and Dawkins currently listed as DPs, that means the Quakes are using 2017 TAM on three players...

    2017 Targeted Allocation Money Players

    Hoesen, Danny San Jose Earthquakes
    Hyka, Jahmir San Jose Earthquakes
    Jungwirth, Florian San Jose Earthquakes

True, they won't release player salary info, so that will never make it to their roster page, that info will continue to come from the player's union...

Anyone know the deal on Mfeka? Was he offered a contract and turned it down? Did the Quakes change their mind about signing him? He's not listed on any roster and wasn't mentioned on loans to Reno. I thought a reporter published a story that he would join the team.

Robert Jonas said Mfeka was physically present at the match vs the Impact. But RJ doesn't know why not yet signed...may issue with no Intl slot.

Armchair Analyst: Stop calling it a "salary cap," it's a "salary budget"

Now, not every team uses every available roster slot, but as you can see via our roster page here, most are filled up. You can also click through this handy dandy interactive graphic made by Steve Fenn, who you should go follow on Twitter:

The obvious truth is that the vast majority of teams use the vast majority of slots they're given, and most of the ones that are unfilled now will get filled in the next couple of months.

So if you're hypothetical Team X, and you want to carry a full, 30-man roster, but don't want to exceed the salary cap by a single penny (thus no DP spending), what is your total possible outlay? Don't say "It's $3.845 million because that's the salary cap", since it should be pretty clear by now that's just not the case.

Given what we know (and a little of what we suspect), here's what we're looking at for the total, non-DP salary budget for 2017:

    • Salary Cap: $3,845,000
    • Supplemental Roster: $65,000 x 4 = $260,000
    • Reserve Roster: $53,000 x 6 = $318,000
    • Homegrown subsidy: $125,000
    • TAM: $1,200,000
    • GAM: $200,000
Total baseline MLS salary budget per team, 2017: $5,948,000.

    Bump.
We really should sticky this thread, as there is just so much important information on it, and some of us refer to it fairly often.

Welcome Lindo Mfeka! He's not listed on that more comprehensive roster site on mlssoccer.com that xbhaskarx posted yet. Sjearthquakes does not list him as international, so I'm adding him as a reserve off-budget slot for not and will update as we find out more.

    Some ugly numbers.

Francis makes twice what Colvey makes.

Bingham makes less than a quarter what Dawkins makes.

Cummings is guaranteed $300k and will probably never play a minute for the team. He gets the team's Innocent Award, which comes with a Ferrari and a Swiss flat.

Top half? It's top half when you're standing on your head, so he didn't completely lie. After summer transfer it's possible the Quakes could move to upper half but we'll see.

We spend about a third of what Toronto spends.
We spend about forty percent of what NyckF*ck spends.
A little better than half what Disney, the Lantern Kickers, and the filth spend.
And 71% of what the evil cheating filth spend.
About two thirds what evil shittle and the Forest Killers spend.

Yeah, we're um, not even in the top half of MLS spenders, let alone in the top quarter.

The worst part of this is that we could and should get more more bang for our bucks. The first thing we need to do is fire Kinnear and hire an entirely new coaching staff, because success starts with coaching.

We've made some steps in the right direction this season with a new BTGM, and new Head of Scouting (a previously unfilled position), a USL affiliate, and we might be making better use of Burlingame (maybe). Still, those are efforts that will take two to three years minimum before they begin to pay off. Well, Jesse and Bruno might pay off much sooner.

Really disappointed in our season. I expected us to suck, and we suck. It's still a terrible feeling to be such a crap team.

    Go Quakes!!
    Fire Dom!!
2-3-3 and sucking so far ...

    Atlanta $8.9 million

    San Jose $6.9 million

Forget about teams that are consistently near the bottom in spending while being top of the table like Dallas and NYRB: If the Quakes spent $2 million more on player salaries, could they be as talented and entertaining as expansion team Atlanta United? I don't really think so. Even if we had the money, we're not adding Yamil Asad for $150k. We wouldn't know how to find a guy like that in Argentina. We'd get some aging lower division guy from Europe who would be totally mediocre in MLS. Josef Martinez and Hector Villalba make a combined $1.8 million, that's pretty comparable to Wondo and Dawkins ($1.6 million)...

Houston is 21st at $5 million, but they have Cubo Torres, Quioto, Elis, Manotas (average age just under 23)...

I'm happy to see more investment in the middle of the roster, i.e. the TAM beneficiaries. That just seems like the most cost effective place to spend your money even if it's not as flashy as getting a superstar. Of course you better be starting or otherwise significantly contributing if you are making a half mil.

What aí notice immediately is Jesse's acquisitions paid a healthier salary, I don't know if that overpaying but sure is a sign of the types of players he's going after rather than Doyle's cheapskate way of running things.

Looking at salaries around the league, we're not overpaying anyone except Francis who is overpaid because he should be in USL.

In part it is about the money, but also, in equal measure at least, it's about how we spend the money that we have. Some teams are clearly much better at finding inexpensive *quality* players overseas. We really suck at that. But, guys like Hyka, Ureña, Jungworth and significant upgrades over Doyle signings. So in some ways, we're moving in the right direction. However, it is also true that even with good players, we can still suck if we are coached by Dominic.

    Bummer.

    I need whiskey.

I'm going to be out of town and away from computers until next Thursday. Keep gnashing your teeth friends, but not too hard, because then you have to go to the dentist and that's not so fun.

    GO Quakes!!

Yeah, I've always felt it's better to have a bunch of "not quite DP's" who are good players than 1 or 2 superstar DP's and then a bunch of mediocre players. The TAM stuff makes that more possible, but the real bargain is HG's. If you can get a bunch of HG's who are contributing, that really opens it up for a bunch of these medium-high signing.
