So pool keepers went away? Then that's definitely only one other roster spot open unless someone gets signed and season-long loaned.

Welcome to assistant coach John Spencer.

I'm also fixing the portion that KMJVet caught earlier, except this appears to be nine players not including Ceren. So, we either need to drop one before the roster freeze, trade for an Int Slot, get Silva's paperwork expedited, or loan him out.

CURRENT SALARY TOTAL for 2016 is was approximately $4,107,000, with is a $3,845,000. Note: Some player's salaries were likely bought down this year with allocation money, and this cost is not represented in the figure above. Part of Wondo's salary (TAM) has been bough down and he has since signed a new multi-year contract. Urena's, Hyka, Jungwirth & Hoesen signing also used TAM.

MLS will allow teams to have up to 31 players on their payrolls this year, thanks to new slots for homegrowns

I love that idea. It's great to place your younger, more raw guys on your USL team and have the ability to call them up from the minors when they are needed (like international dates). I hope the Quakes will take advantage of that. Love to see them sign JT so they have the pipeline flowing when/if Bingham wants to go overseas.

I guess this came out sometime last year, the 2016 FIFPRO employment report. Just looking at the front page is depressing. It also makes me realize that soccer players are no different from actors in the entertainment industry, where only the top 1-2% make money and all the rest struggle.

MLS comes out looking good in that report. The league is stable and players get paid on time. 95% are satisfied with their medical support. Compared to other countries, MLS has a lot to offer players.

This is great news! Now we can sign some of those draft picks as well as a 3rd goalkeeper. SB Nation has two different articles reporting 2 more slots for a total of 30. I'm not sure which it is, so for now I just add a section for our two Homegrown players. If we get a third HG I'll add another spot.

Looks like even Philly.com is now saying two, so 30 not 31...

From an article about Adam Najem and Philly:

Although MLS headquarters hasn't announced this yet, multiple sources confirmed that a new rule will soon be announced that allows teams to expand their rosters to 30 players if two of those players are homegrown.

    More info from that link:

Although MLS headquarters hasn't announced this yet, multiple sources confirmed that a new rule will soon be announced that allows teams to expand their rosters to 30 players if two of those players are homegrown.

The Union have two homegrown players on their roster in midfielder Derrick Jones and defender Auston Trusty. So they get the two extra slots.

Those two players must occupy reserve player slots on the roster, which means the minimum salary requirements are lower than for regular roster slots.

    ...

Expect the official division of roster slots this year to be as follows: 20 senior roster slots that count toward the salary cap; three supplemental roster slots at the senior pay scale that don't count toward the cap; and six reserve slots.

On top of that, any MLS team can take advantage of an existing rule that expands rosters by another slot, as long as that player is loaned to a USL affiliate and is not recalled for the full year.

Add everything up and the Union will be able to carry 31 players on their payroll this year in some form.

Well we know what the plans for the two homegrown slots are, we have just the right number of homegrowns to fill those.
So it's a question of who that hasn't been signed yet fills the non-HGP slots (Olmes Garcia Mfeka, Thierjung), and if anyone goes to Reno on a full-season loan (Thierjung makes sense, anyone else like Silva or Colvey they'd want to be able to recall when necessary)...

It's good to see the Quakes roster getting significantly younger...

New Year, New Me - Quakes overhaul roster heading into 2017

Ages of players not retained from 2016 (avg.: 30.13):
    34 (Goodson)
    34 (Stewart)
    32 (Goitom)
    31 (Barrett)
    30 (Lenhart)
    27 (Innocent)
    27 (Meredith)
    26 (Sherrod)

Ages of players signed for 2017 (avg.: 24.71):
    19 (Yueill)
    22 (Lima)
    24 (Cummings)
    26 (Hoesen)
    26 (Ureña)
    28 (Hyka)
    28 (Jungwirth)

They forgot to include Quintero (29) on the departed list, he makes the average age 30 exactly.
The other possible signings are Garcia 24, Mfeka 22, Thierjung 22, Schilder 22... so the average age of signed players could drop by even more (23.9 if they sign them all).

Of course the Quakes still have two 34 year olds (Bernardez and Wondo) on the roster, as well as three others over 30 (Salinas, Wynne, Imperiale)...

    Thanks!

Yeah, good to see some youth coming into the squad, and some older players washing out. We should have moved Bernardez to scouting or coaching or something. I'm not sure he has another full season in him.

And there are other players that I think we should have cut or traded, Francis because he stinks, and maybe Sarkodie too because he stinks. We'd need to bring on some young defenders to replace them, but that shouldn't be too hard.

And we've been stock piling holding mids like we hope to play with four or five of them. That just doesn't make sense to me.

I'd have ditched Dawkins too. No way is he worth $800K a year. Not even $400K. Can't have your top earners dramatically under performing.

    Still disappointed.

Bobby Warshaw had a podcast with 2 MLS players about the pre-season. Team-building is a major issue, and they talked about how, regardless of how players try, after 1-2 weeks a team habitually falls into cliques of English-speaking, Spanish-speaking, and African heritage. One guy said that one season he was accepted into the Jamaican group and ate Jamaican food every night (no, it wasn't TT). They discussed a lot of stuff, it was very illuminating.

The Law of Conservation of Panamanians has been honored however as we lost Quintero but gained Cummings. Don't know how they'd get along with a Costa Rican. Are they bitter rivals? But in any case I think anyone can get along with anybody. Speaking the same language definitely helps. Unfortunately they no longer have team social coordinator Jordan Stewart.

I don't think this is terribly surprising; if you go to pretty much any middle or high school in the Bay Area, you'll find a bunch of white kids with white kids, Asian kids with Asian kids and Latino kids with Latino kids. Of course, the self-segregation isn't absolute (e.g. it was pretty strange to pick up my fair-haired daughter from school and see her detach from a group of perhaps ten Asian girls -- I guess because she's short she fit in! ;)) but from my observations this is pretty normal in any group setting.

I recently had dinner with Jamaican former Quake Khari Stephenson (among other people) at the Cheescake Factory, so I think the expression "every night," and the imputation of self-segregation, might be exaggerated. :)

Who knows how accurate it was, as it was presumably 3 white guys talking about self-segregation... I've always noticed that during warmups, there is a distinct hierarchy in who people warm up with.

Actually, when talking about eating out, the players were talking more about when they are Traveling I.e., pre-season and away games. They thought that if they saw more than like 5 guys eating dinner together after an away game, that correlated with better chemistry and a better performing team. One team had 11 players eating together.
