More often than not, winning the Olympics means ******** all for the following World Cup and vice versa. In 2008, the United States won the Olympics but lost in the World Cup final in 2011. In 2016, Germany won the Olympics only to be knocked out in the quarter-finals at the World Cup in 2019. In 2021, Canada won the Olympics only to be knocked out in the group stage at the World Cup in 2023. I can think of many other examples. Since 2008 (so essentially in the last 15 years or so), only the US was able to win Olympic Gold and then win the World Cup afterwards (in 2012 and 2015 respectively). If anything, winning gold at the Olympics almost guarantees you won't win the subsequent World Cup and that you might in fact not even reach the World Cup final.
you don’t remember correctly. The USA has twice won an Olympics and then the following World Cup. 1996 —>1999 And 2012 —> 2015
Just watching this now. The Brazilians work rate is 'wow!', off the charts, so far. They absolutely deserved that first goal for the constant pressure they were putting on the Spanish players, all over the field.
Spanish defending and goalkeeping were horrible in this match; players looked lost out there at times, not knowing how/who to defend. Brazilian tenacity scares me for USA's sake in the gold medal match. Spain misses Jorge Vilda, whether they realize it or not. He had this team humming.
