Of all the games that will be played this year, none will surpass Wednesday's 2006 World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina in terms of talent, pedigree and mutual animosity. And that includes any American team sport. It also includes Real Madrid-Barcelona, Boca Juniors-River Plate and Arsenal-Manchester United (all tied for a close second); and Germany-England, Germany-Italy or Germany-France, should they play in the upcoming Euro 2004 tournament. Put another way, if you're a soccer purist stuck on a desert island and you're allowed to watch just one game, this would be it. Brazil and Argentina have won four of the seven World Cups played since 1978. One or the other has reached the final in all but one tournament, in 1982, during that span. Their international eminence extends to the under-20 level, where they've combined to win five of the past six FIFA Youth World Championship trophies. Wednesday's match means less in terms of qualifying to play in 2006 than it does in proving who wields South America's biggest stick. Both Brazil and Argentina are virtual locks to claim two of the four spots allotted to the continent for the next World Cup. Still, the fact that it's just the third Cup qualifier played between the nations will raise the body heat in the 90,000-seat Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, to a boiling point. The teams split the two games they played in 2002 qualifying, each winning at home. Brazil's 3-1 defeat of Argentina in Sao Paulo was the Argentines only loss in 18 games. More notable than the results, however, was the skill and ferocity of the play. Former Argentina international Diego Simeone described those games as being perpetually "on edge." Brazil defender Roberto Carlos was less restrained, calling it "war" and a "fight to the death." Carlos exaggerates in the literal sense, though the desperation of the players -- and fans -- was palpable. Wednesday's game comes at a fortuitous time because, with the end of the European club season, most players can focus on performing for just one team instead of two. The teams should be well-prepped, if not completely rested, though Argentina enters with a decided limp. Midfielders Juan Sebastian Veron, Juan Roman Riquelme, Matias Almeyda and Andres D'Allesandro were all dropped by coach Marcelo Bielsa because of assorted injuries. Oddly, Bielsa omitted Boca Juniors forward Carlos Tevez, arguably the best player in the Argentine League. The attack includes Javier Saviola and Pablo Aimar, who are coming off big club seasons in Spain. Brazil retains the core that played in 2002 qualifiers, with Carlos and Cafu still running the flanks out of the defensive end. The attack has changed somewhat, with Kaka replacing Rivaldo, and Ronaldinho emerging as a world-class star. Also, Ronaldo isn't injured, as he was during 2002 qualifying. The game is being aired at 8:40 p.m. on a pay-per-view basis on the Dish Network. It will also be screened in area bars and restaurants (list of businesses showing the game on 19C).

Pekerman advirtió que la selección argentina de fútbol "está en emergencia" y en una transición "inestable", en parte debido a que "la actualidad de los jugadores argentinos en el mundo es bastante opaca".
