I'm wondering what people think of the push to promote soccer in Seattle. They seem to be bringing quite a few US national and big name teams to the area to play. That and the new football stadium might indicate MLS is thinking of putting a team there. Without adding a second city to the league as well (an 11 team league doesn't make sense), I wonder what their other options are. Moving the team with the lowest home attendance could be a real possibility and that would mean the Quakes. Does this worry anyone else but me?
It doesn't make any sense for MLS to move the San Jose franchise. They need the representation in the Bay Area. Also, the team seems to be on the right track attracting more fans. A "Football," you mean gridball, stadium doesn't mean jack. Garber thankfully is smart enough to know that MLS teams need to be in stadia that they control. So unless Paul Allen (sp?) is going to buy into MLS, putting an MLS team in that stadium is a complete non-starter of an idea. So no, I'm not worried. GO QUAKES!! - Mark
If anything the quakes will be movesd to San Francisco. That would make more sense than Seattle San Francisco EarthQuakes
As soon as the city builds them an SSS in Mission Bay, right down the road from Pac Bell Park. Man that would be awesome!
What are you implying? Hell, if they move the team to San Francisco, they should rename them the Seals.
Come on-Loma Prieta peak in in the Santa Cruz mountains, I live less than 10 miles from it. There fore the team should move to Santa Cruz.
First of all if any of you think they are going to move the quakes, your crazy. Seattle or whatever city gets it will be an expansion team. How they are going to bring them into the league...weather its by two to keep the divisions equal or just converge the two into one big league like they should have done. I dont think any of us have to worry about losing San Jose.
They'll NEVER move the Quakes. What with that huge fan base and great stadium deal... Oh wait, must have been thinking of the San Jose Giants...
They aren't going to move the Quakes. The place has showed promise and has terrific potential. I would think that they would 'promote' the A-League side Sounders. The team had the best record last year, so there are bound to be a few players that could make the MLS roster. By using the existing front office/team identity, you already have a grassroots connection with the team. Moving a team to Seattle or creating an entire new one would kill the A-League franchise and, I would think, alienate the A-League fans.
it would be fun if the quakes moved to seattle, since i live only 4 hours away!! just think... i'd get to see my favorite team on a weekly basis ::sigh:: lol actually, what would be nice is if seattle got their own MLS team, you know, turned the Sounders into one. that would be even better
Agreed. And no offense to you folks, I'd rather have a brand spanking-new franchise than to have to take the California plates off this one.
Correction: the latter is much more likely than the former!       With no less an MLS authority than league co-founder Alan Rothenberg himself pretty much admitting that the league had screwed with the San Jose market way too much for far too long (perhaps not in those exact words, but pretty close), MLS owes (that's right... owes!) it to the San Jose soccer market to leave the Earthquakes be.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Ideally, the Seattle Sounders would be promoted into MLS (along with another expansion team, of course) - but wouldn't the Sounders' promotion into MLS immeasurably hurt the A-League?       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Interesting comments by Rob Stone during the U.S. - Venezuela broadcast that MLS is quite actively wooing Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen. Presumably, Allen's franchise would be in Seattle, though it could conceivably be in Portland as I believe he owns the Portland Trailblazers. Getting Paul Allen on board as an MLS investor would be a major coup, though... as long as he doesn't relocate our team!
On a somewhat related note, I think a European-style promotion/relegation system between MLS and the A-League would spice up soccer here... too bad it will never happen.
MLS has been trying quite hard to woo Allen. Even if they had a different owner/operator for a Seattle team they would play at the football stadium if they got a fair amount of the concession/souvenir/parking revenues.
Agreed. right now, the Sounders play games at Interbay Stadium... a dinky little piece of turf just a block away from the freeway. Sometimes they play at the new football stadium, but not usually. What is all of this talk about "re-locating" the quakes to seattle?? i don't think it will happen. it would be too hectic for the players AND the fans... If they did decide to move the quakes, would everyone on the team have to move to Seattle?? i don't know, i think it's a bad idea.
