Well not really... LA racked up 37 in the beta version of MLS, before the 35-yard shootout got bugfixed, eg. But since MLS turned 1.0, we're the first team to reach 32 pts on the road with an incredible 9-3-5 record... Including wins over playoff teams-- Colorado, RSL, KC and Dallas-- and draws against Philly, Columbus and LA. Of course let's not forget road wins against PDX and VAN, both come-from-behind... and christening Livestrong with its first loss-- both goals in 89+. All while winning a 3-eattle Open Cup, qualifying for CCL knockouts, and taking down Monterrey on the road. Long live traveling support! Oh yeah, and just for kicks, Chivas USA was our 26th win of the season in meaningful competition-- USOC, CCL, and MLS.
Asoc is correct. We would have needed 1 more goal and a draw against somebody else just to get to a tiebreaker.
That was true for the Fire back in '08-'09, though we didn't have the legitimate excuse of our home field having artificial turf. Your style of play seems much more suited to natural grass surfaces. LA's record should stand, though. Reaching any specific number of points was more difficult back then, due to the shootout and the fewer number of games. I'm guessing it came in '98, when they had that ludicrously good regular season, both at home and on the road. There was an 8-1 win in Dallas along the way.
LA's record definitely stands... I think their 37 pts in 15 games is corrected for draws vs shootouts though. My intent was more to indicate where we stand in the pantheon of MLS, not to boast an actual invention. That LA PPG record will never be beaten and I will bet a lot of money on that. I could've just said "2nd best away PPG", but I wasn't sure of it. San Jose came within a whisker of it, but I wasn't sure if anyone else had.
