News: Scourge of Gambling in Asian Football

ABC Radio National Rear Vision program today looked at gambling in sport generally and touched on football in Asia particular:

Now to our listeners in Australia, it seems absolutely extraordinary, but the level of corruption in Asian sport completely overwhelms it. In fact it's very, very difficult to think of a non-corrupted Asian sport of any kind, and that's a ranging from Thailand's baseball which is now down to only four teams in the league; all the other teams have been expelled because of match-fixing and corruption; Japanese sumo wrestling - as you know, they've had to cancel their national championship for the first time since the Second World War. I don't have to tell your listeners about Pakistani or Indian cricket. But the real thing is soccer, soccer across the continent of Asia is a complete disaster. It's a national embarrassment in China, and those aren't the words of a Canadian academic, those are the words of Hu Jintao the Chinese Premier, who estimated something like 70% of the matches in the Chinese Soccer League had been fixed.
