i think collins would be a good addition, im sure he is gettign up there in years but he has always been a fitness fanatic. i could really see DC picking him up.

We've been talking about this a little on the Metro board. Collins fits the description of one of the more interesting rumors we've had over the last couple weeks. With Andy Williams apparently gone, he might be a good pickup for our team.

Of course, I don't think I've ever seen the guy play, so isn't worth all that much in this instance. :)

    Collins can play.

He was one of the better players on the '98 Scottish World Cup team, looked really good against Brazil. (Scored on a well-taken penalty.)

He apparently had a fairly serious toe injury in '99, and I haven't seen him play since, but if he's recovered, he'd be a nice addition to the league.

I havent seen him play in awhile, because he hasn't, but he is still a quality player even at 34. If you want to use that argument, then getting Earnie Stewart is a waste as well.

Yeah, you're right. And you, as a Fire fan, would know about how bad players in their 30's can be. Nowak and Stoitchkov were just terrible for your team.

    Whoo, were they bad.
    [/tongue in cheek]

    I'll tell you this.

I'd rather have a 34-year old John Collins than a 35-year old John Harkes or a 33-year old Mark Chung.

But I'd rather have a Tom Collins than any of them.

You're right about Harkes but Chung was one of the top 10 players in the league last year so unless he's aged quite a bit in 5 months, I still think he's got something left.

    Okay, that's fair.

I had the 2001 Chung in mind, not the guy who was terrific last season.

    I'll amend what I wrote.

I'd rather have John Collins than a 31-year old Chris Armas.

But, again, I'd prefer the Tom Collins.

Earnie is an American hero, and amazingly speedy for his age. Few can compare.

Stewart did very well 7 months ago at the WC Finals. So we know he has not lost it....

As for Collins, none of the posters on this thread have seen him played for a long time. Whether he can play or not, we don't know.

considering the size of the metrostars roster at this point with balboa, andy williams and paule being waived.....

at this point, i'd take joan collins.

Not me. I'd much rather have Harkes or Balboa or Chung than this Collins guy.

If MLS is going to pay aging soccer players - at least let it be aging American soccer players who have helped grow the league.

Those are the guys we watched play in the 94 World Cup, Those are the guys who lived through the hideous MLS uniforms of 1996. They deserve a season or two in the sun - not some Scottish guy. And crikey - Chung was an MVP candidate last year - lets not hang him out to dry to early.

metros payed balboa last year....and he accepted all their money and played a total of 5 minutes.....and he received the max salary....

this year, metros asked him to take a paycut to 100k or so (rumored)....apparently, he refused it....

the metros have also been funding tab's retirement for the past few years as well....

personally, i'd rather spend the money on players that can play...if they are americans, fine...if not, that's fine too....

but lets face it, none of these players would be here if they had offers from other clubs overseas for more money.....as far as the 90 or 94 world cup veterans being entitled to play in mls for a ridiculous amount of money while the young guys are making 25K, fook that. mls has paid its debt to these guys by giving them the max salary for the last 7 years...time to let them go and let their salaries trickle down and raise the minimum salary.

stewart can still play, so yes, he is entitled to his salary...

i appreciate everything that ramos, wynalda, lalas, harkes, etc. did for mls and now that they are in the twilight of their career....its time they came to the reality that they may not be worth as much as they think they are....

you're trying to compare collins to stoichkov and novak. world class players to a scottish international. and then (correct me if i'm wrong) several of you are trying to say that you'd rather have this guy over american players. and further more, you're trying to end my argument by saying why I would rather sign Earnie Stewart.

    you fools.

what has the last two years of MLS taught you guys? forgive me for not elaborating. YOUNG INTERNATIONALS with potential for growth, create the greatest immediate and long lasting benefit for the league. For example, stern john, carlos ruiz, ronnie obrien, ryan nelson, etc. etc. etc. these players are our most consistent starters and producers. not only do they bring respect for the league abroad (which some of you don't care about as ridiculous as that is) but __________, whatever fill in the blank.

i'm not negating what internationals like john spencer and miklos molnar have contributed to our league. but MLS is moving on to another phase in its developement. and if we can fill every position with a player all of us know can play for 90 minutes and is ready to commit for 2-3 years in order to grow the league, that's what we want.

so stop this nonense and quit with the boring comparisons. that way of thinking is old, just like collins.

and I AM drinking a tom collins.

    Nowak's a world-class player and John Collins isn't?

Nowak's 38 years old, he'll be 39 during the season. Before coming to MLS, Nowak had 24 caps for Poland, and had most recently played for 1860 Munich, a half season at Kaiserslautern, Dynamo Dresden, Young Boys Berne, Bakirkoyspor, and WKS Zawisza Bydogoszck.

Collins is 34, has 58 Scottish caps, played brilliantly in a World Cup, and has played in the last ten seasons for Celtic, Monaco, Everton, and Fulham.

Now, which is the world class player again?

Match Game. I like Match Game.

"Dumb Rongen was so dumb...(how dumb was he?)...He was so dumb, he went out to sign a wingback and came back with a blank."

Anyway, back to the topic at hand...

First of all, respect doesn't pay the bills.

Secondly, even if you care what the French or Spanish think about our league, do you really think guys like Ronnie O'Brien and Ryan Nelson get MLS more respect than Spencer, Grimandi or Collins would?

    Nice. That, I approve of.

Oh, and by the way, Northside, I did retract my dig at Mark Chung. I had 2001 crappy Chung in mind, not 2002 MVP candidate Chung.

And just to prove I really mean it, Chungy, if you're reading this, there's a standing offer of a free Tom Collins whenever you want it.
