https://www.skysports.com/football/...-fa-must-keep-him-in-set-up-for-the-long-term think he is yet another one badly misreading this. the results are fine but it is blatantly obvious international ball quality is down. GER have bombed out at the group stage twice with next to no youth prospects to refresh (not impressed by Havertz outside of season 1) and you could tell why NED was never going to cut it either - Memphis 10? L de Jong 9? Berghuis 11? Janssen??? says it all. especially compared to the teams of the past what innovation has Southgate brought anyway? he doesn't even innovate his choices despite claiming otherwise. feels like another Maguire - where there is a dedicated push to inflate ability and importance
I do think Southgate is doing better now. No more 3 CBs. His faith in some players has paid off. Declan Rice did not look like anything special until after the Euros. I just think his loyalty to some could hurt him. Leaving Tomori out was I think a mistake. His loyalty also blinds him to making the right subs when he needs to. Contrast that to Deschamps. He will bury the hatchet and play whoever is legitimately the best player for the role.

Romano says chelsea sealed Nkunku for £53m. not a bad price. can't wait to see them find a way to make him struggle
This the guy that Ralf asked about and the scouting department has no file on? Who is running that dept now?
https://www.skysports.com/football/...england-manager-football-association-confirms confirmed now. dunno how the fans feel about that
+ consistently qualifies (things have been worse) + safe and defensive (suits much of tournament football) - predictable - sticks to his favourites despite form / fitness - no tactical nous - not brave or innovative enough (will never win a tournament)

Isco is a bum. Wasting his talent away. Southgate has done alright overall. England could get Guardiola in 2026.
If Southgate stays it shows England is content with mediocrity. Same with US and Berhalter. I think you may be on to something re Pep. Maybe Southgate stays until 2024 Euros and Pep takes over?
I think Berhalter tests himself in Europe soon enough. Southgate is too nice and loyal. Needs to be more ruthless.
