I can't wait to see him back against Austria. :) I am so tired of those mediocre midfielder stand-ins.

Unfortunately Schneider isn't getting any younger. Hopefully we'll be see a talent like Bernd again in the near future.

A win this summer would be the perfect end to Schneider's career.

You're forgetting how decidedly mediocre he was for some time. He's a pretty good, but never really more than a good player (although there have been times where he is excellent). The fact that he gets shifted around even at times to LB and RB shows how versatile he is, and as a result, his reputation gets tarnished a bit because he never really has had a set role in the team. Now that he does, he shows good performances.

Thing is with Schneider (like Klose) is he's never relied on his pace and thats why he's still doing well. I hope he takes our corners as well, no one seems to do it well and I think Schneider would de well there (or Frings even)

Schneider just deals in passes and dribbles so he can really play anywhere.

I think he's been way more than a "good player who has been excellent at times".

When he doesn't play, Germany do run into a few roadblocks in midfield when the opposition is tough. Things don't flow.

I read an article yesterday according to which he was rather struggling to find his form during the winter preparations after his injuries, but at least he was playing for 90min again. He's at an age where nothing can be taken for granted any more, let's hope the best.

Behind Klose, the most underrated German player. I can count the number of better wide midfielders on one hand.

Yeah. You have no idea how many times I've seen people on this board slobber over Ibra, Didi, Ruud, Totti and Eto'o (and even players like Toni and Torres) without so much as a mention of Klose.

By the time Kroos and Marin are starters on the wings for the NT, Schneider will only be playing for Leverkusen.

Bernd is really THE playmaker...he's not a winger as such. He makes the clever moves and the passes to keep the team ticking. He plays a lot in the middle.

This is what Kroos will be doing too.

Well if you put it that way. I meant replacing positions. IM pretty sure marin will replace bernd and Kroos will replace ballack in the near future if all goes well.

    Yeah I guess.

Ballack is a wierd player though...I mean he doesn't have skills on the same level as Kroos or any of the earlier classic playmakers like Andi Moeller, Felix Magath, Netzer etc...but he's always talked about as the playmaker. Schneider is the one who I'd call the "playmaker" in this team.

See, I don't think Ballack will be replaced in the near future, which is why I'd bet on Kroos and Marin starting as LOM and ROM with Ballack doing his thing at CM.

I don't think ballack or Frings will go anywhere till 2010 either.

Ballack in a recent interview said he isn't and never will be a playmaker, and that he thinks that talk is nonsense either...

Yes I mean it would be slightly embarassing to compare his play and skills to someone like Felix Magath or Hansi Mueller. Did you guys get the chance to watch the 1986 WC semifinal clip before Gregoriak's account got booted? Magath in that game was more like a classical #10.

He is not a traditional playmaker but more of a modern one. He has multiple duties on the field, one of which can be those of a traditional playmaker.

Ballack but I guess the same could be applied to Schneider.

He is a modern playmaker in the sense that he doesn't create through the middle. Ok, maybe not so modern since that is partially a winger's job but that is certainly one of his strong points.
