    Footballers up on match-fix charges

Two football players were yesterday charged with conspiracy to fix matches while a deputy team manager was accused of illegal betting. All three were members of the Happy Valley Athletic Association.

Mainland midfielder Fan Weijun, 35, a former assistant coach, and Croatian defender Sasa Mus, 27, each face one count of conspiracy to defraud.

Former deputy football team manager Hinson Leung Cheuk-hin, 26, faces one count of betting with a bookmaker.

The trio will appear in the Eastern Magistracy at 9.30am tomorrow for plea.

Happy Valley was one of the 12 football teams competing in the Hong Kong Football Association First Division and the Senior Shield Championship in the 2013-14 season.

Fan is alleged to have conspired together with others to defraud the HVAA and the HKFA between December 7 and 8, 2013 by not playing to his best in a match against Sun Pegasus Football Club on December 8.

Mus is alleged to have conspired together with Leung, Liao Siwei and other persons to defraud the HVAA and the HKFA by not playing to his best abilities against Southern District Football Club last November 30.

Leung is alleged to have placed bets through a bookmaking website on the match on January 5 between Happy Valley and Sun Hei Sports Club.

The defendants have been freed on bail pending their court appearance.

ICAC officers arrested Happy Valleys technical director Sergio Timoner and six of his players hours after the team lost 5-0 to Sun Hei on January 5.

Other players were also taken in two coaches to ICAC headquarters in North Point. Three of them were seen leaving headquarters shortly after 11pm - three hours after they were escorted away.

Happy Valley Athletic Association chairman Pui Kwan- kay said at the time he was highly concerned about the case, but added he was not responsible for managing the team.

Pui also said it was difficult for the association to monitor the flow of capital in football clubs, adding that many clubs do not have sufficient funds to increase the pay of players to avoid match-fixing.

Happy Valley was suspended from the league and cup following the allegations of match-fixing.
