Castaneda gets the start against Schalke, and ESPN+ is showing the match. A chance to see a rising dual nat prospect and develop your own opinions. May already be a top two uncapped YA midfielder, and probably a top two American in the 2.Bundesliga this year as well (Julian Green has an argument). Paderborn in first place, Schalke are depressing.
Three Paderborn players down hurt in the first five minutes as Schalke attempt to win through violence.
Paderborn go up 1-0, and it's technically a Castaneda hockey assist. Nice move by him to create space just inside his own half, but his simple lateral ball pales in comparison to a brilliant ball over the whole defense by I think Gotze, which Kostons settles perfectly and shoots from the top of the box and in. Very poor job by the defenders failing to have a good line and not tracking Kostons after the ball was played.
Schalke equalize. Castaneda perhaps could have more aggressively cut down the man who made the key pass, but was trying to contain things. Didn't work. A shot-save-convenient rebound later lets Sylla score. Match still much more even than Paderborn would like.
Schalke now up 2-1 after a turnover and quick counter. Castaneda chased the play to bail Paderborn out unsuccessfully.
Paderborn own the early second half, punctuated by a point blank header from Gotze making it 2-2. Belated first half review of Castaneda - clean, but they slightly lost the midfield battle and shouldn't against this weaker opponent.
69th minute great free kick from 45 yards away flicked on perfectly into the net to put Schalke back up 3-2 very much against the run of play.
Schalke make it 4-2 in the 88th minute in the aftermath of a free kick. Goodnight Paderborn, and their lead in the league will get narrow. Castaneda will probably get medium reviews versus the rest of the squad, and this may be the worst or second-worst outing of the year for them.
