From cnnsi.com In a desperate move to stave off nearly certain relegation from the German first division, Nuremberg fired coach Klaus Augenthaler on Wednesday and replaced him with Wolfgang Wolf. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/news/2003/04/30/german_rdp/
Not to start any conspiracy theories, but IIRC, Wolfgang Wolf benched Reyna (and possibly Deering) when he took over at Wolfsburg.
Yeah, but he made him captain first and then begged him to stay later, so... think WW will make Sanneh captain, then bench him?
I don't remember that - are you sure about that? He only played sparingly the year Wolfgang became coach. I did find this quote by Wolfgang right before the 98 WC, which is pretty impressive: http://www.s-t.com/daily/06-98/06-08-98/d12sp176.htm
Honestly, anything older than breakfast I'm not completely sure of, but in my shakey recollection, Reyna was made Captain the summer of the WC, which was also the summer before he went to Gers (spring '99). He was certainly captain under Wolf, even if Wolf didn't make him captain. I do remember that Wolf and Wolfsburg tried hard to keep him - he hit a silly hot streak (4 goals v. Hamburg? maybe) just before the transfer and Wolf would have kept him if they could. I'll take a minute and check it out for sure.
Ok, this is as big a shock to me as anyone, but it was Wolfie that made CR captain. He was given the armband in August of '98, and Wolfie was made coach in the spring of '98, I'm pretty sure. Now it was also Wolfie that yanked the armband, (I think). As to Wolfsburg not wanting Reyna to go, I haven't found a quote for that, but I'm reasonably sure about that as well. I do remember him getting hot that spring, even scoring, which is always a bit surprising for Reyna. Anyway, it means little for Tony. He's got to get healthy (like Reyna) before silly things like coaches make a difference.
I can't tell anything about Reyna at Wolfsburg or Wolf's attitude towards American players (I guess he sees them just like any others, at least I don't see a reason why he shouldn't do this), but I can confirm that Wolf became head coach in Wolfsburg on March 23rd, 1998. Exactly. Let's hope that he finds a solution for his back problems first, otherwise he won't have a new coach anymore. Wolf's attitude is not a lot different to Augenthaler. He demands hard work, always plays with four defenders and at least in Wolfsburg with three forwards (I doubt that Nuremberg has the forwards for that). If or when Sanneh returns, we will see what Wolf thinks of him and what position he determines him to play. At least Sanneh has one rival less: Dusan Petkovic won't get a new contract - he was Wolf's player in Wolfsburg, but didn't get playing time; then he was loaned to Nuremberg and scored against Wolfsburg with a pk: he ran to Wolfsburg's coaching bench directly in front of Wolf for celebrating the goal.
