Good question. If it's a case of the Crew FO giving him some right back, then I say bravo to them for it. I gotta say re: Sanneh that I was never sure they really ever wanted him in the first place. MLS seems to feel they have to bring guys back in after they fall out of favor overseas, and CBus was, IIRC about the only team that had a spot for him. (And since at the end of the day it's MLS that pays his salary, not anybody in CBus, there's really no big problem with this.) So the Crew took the guy in and wanted to use him because, well, because he was here. All understandable. But I was never convinced they had a big stiffy for landing the guy. Maybe I'm all wet on this - sure wouldn't be the first time - but that's how it looked to me. As for the question of how a Coach handles this kind of thing, I'd prefer a coach whose atmosphere didn't allow this sort of arrogant punk crap in the first place. I'm sure it's lovely to "sit them down" and have a nice chitty-chat heart-to-heart over tea and cookies so everybody can have a group hug and have their feelings validated and blah, blah, blah. What I'd prefer is a coach who gets in your grill and says "Listen jackass, this is MY goddam team here, and I don't care who the hell you think you are, you pull any more of this arrogant 'oooh, look at me, I'm a big star' crap around here and I'll personally kick your fat ass from here to Obetz so you can pack your goddam bags. Are you hearing me??? I don't need your overrated, out of shape, euro-reject ego screwing up my team, and if you don't like it, there's the fvckin door"
Your a bigger Drama Queen than any of my three sisters!!! Here in Chicago slapping is foreplay! Frankie
I know it sounds harsh, but my opinion (and it's only my opinion, although I'll bet you six of your favorites that Eggy agrees with me) is that these are professionals, not U 11 girls. You're paid to show up, do your job and act like a pro, not get into bitch-slapping hissyfits with your teammates. That crap has a negative affect on the team as a whole and casts doubt on the Coach's leadership, among other things. I'm really not blaming the coach here, but on an awful lot of big clubs a player wouldn't do this sort of thing not because he knows better but because he's too scared of what the manager will do to him if he does. I know there's more than one way to run a club, but on a lot of clubs there's only room for one huge, obnoxious oversized ego and that's the gaffer. Others need not apply. Even in the US: try this crap around Bruce Arena and you'll have skid marks on your ass. If you're so goddam hot, if you're such a star, if you feel you can do whatever you want because of what a glorious bigshot you are, then there's no room for you. Can you imagine a class act like McBride or Fraser or BMais slapping a teammate on the pitch during a match? It's just punk garbage. If this story is true, and I'm betting Hunter was pretty confident that it was, then I say congratulations to the Crew for peddling his sorry ass.
I can't really grasp what the purpose of this story is now. At the time or immediately after the playoffs it would have made sense. Granted I can see that maybe someone on in Crewville is trying to save face for themself or the FO based on Tony's comments. Most of the fanbase though probably didn't even see Tony's comments, just the lunatic fringe like ourselves. I just don't see who it really benefits. On one hand, I agree with Bill and applaud the FO for leaking this if it's true, but on the other all it does is raise too many questions about Andrulis and why this situation never came to light in the first place. If Greg himself was trying to save face by leaking this story he must not have realized that all it does is make him look like an even bigger chump than he already is. I hate stories like this that make my head spin...especially when we don't know if any of it is true or not.
and that is why i don't sweat the whle "he was a wasted allocation" argument. he wasn't our choice, and now in turn for an allocation we got a pretty damn good goalscorer.
I love stories like this. Especially this time of the year. What else is there to talk about? The Crew's 3-1 win over some college team? Blah! My only complaint is Sanneh punched, sorry slapped, Marshall. The poor kid's so quiet, I'm not sure what he did. It's too bad he didn't slap Denton.
I wish he would have touched a downed power line. Maybe we would have won that 2nd match against New England. Of course you love this kind of story Jay you're a reporter. You guys always love stuff like this. For me, if there aren't any more answers available I would rather not even see it published in the 1st place.
Andrulis is just too soft on the players. Sanneh, Cunningham, Denton, etc etc...There is just too much negativity in our club
While I can appreciate focusing the anger towards Andrulis, I am making it my personal mission to make Sanneh's trips to Columbus hell. Cunningham traded, a club with no future, a crap coach, blown pk's, smacking Marshall, all will be focused into my hatred for this fcuk.
Well, think of it this way: Chicago sent their designated headcase, who also happened to be the team's PK and sitter misser to Columbus who sent Chicago theirs. Razov, from his days in Spain getting sent home for fighting team mates, to him sulking after being substituted, to him complaining that he [and not Stoitchkov nor Nowak] should take all the free kicks, to him bitching whenever the fans jeer him for missing PKs, to him sucker punching Jesse Marsch in practice, to him fighting Evan Whitfield at a media day event is a perfect swap for Sanneh and all his baggage. Neither player will be in the league in 2 years, and all parties should just move on. [OK, I'm leaving now...]
First time I ever repped a F*re fan. Well, except for Segroves. I suppose though that all of this has a positive aspect from Velma Ave's perspective: it prevents us from wondering what they've done in the off season to make the team better.
Well, we only heard a few weeks ago (again, months after the event) that Sanneh over-ruled Cunningham on the PK vs. NE.
That's simply not true. I remember hearing this almost directly after the game. Am I wrong? I seem to remember it being that way.
That was reported maybe a day after the game was over, I remember hearing it and being stunned that we had taken a selfish striker and made him in to someone who would give up a chance at a PK. Although this had not been reported until today's article in the Dispatch, I can tell you it happened and was discussed in the locker room after the game. I have a source, not within the Crew FO or stranglehold, that confimed it happened when I talked to them after seeing the 'note' in the Dispatch this morning.
Scoring goals while you were in your diapers? Sanneh is a huge fuken prick. Marshall will become a player that Sanneh wish he couldve been. You're garbage Sanneh and I hope you rot in Chitown you ugly punk.
I figured that it was automatic that Sanneh will recieve some abuse in Columbus. What we need now is some clever songs.
You are right Zak, but I'm guessing that was because the club knew Jeff was going to say something, whereas Marshall at least gives us the impression that he's some kind of quiet, self-controlled guy. Which brings up the question if Marshall is as squaeky clean as we think, or if he did something more to provoke Sanneh, and we're just getting one side of the story. True, and now they're all gone, thus the positivity should increase. Okay, maybe not.
I have a hard time believing a big, young, strapping kid like Chad Marshall would get slapped and not slap, at least, back. He's got that sweet looking face, but Chad's a big boy and I bet he could kick some ass in a scrap. I mean, he's from the white trash haven of Riverside, CA! He and Sanneh in a ring would get a pretty good draw on pay-per-view. I know Tony can be a handful so I won't put this past him. But the fact that NO ONE saw it and that it was kept private for so long and that Marshall didn't retaliate and that Arena called them both into national team camp... it just doesn't add up. Certainly makes for some nice drama when the Crew and Fire meet, though. Those corner kicks are gonna be a blast!
