You must be joking. Even if it was tactically sensible, they couldn't help themselves. In both parties, knee-jerk partisan emotions and scoring rhetorical political points rule over all else.
Too intelligent of a choice for this administration. My early money is on Ashcroft, with the mother of all nomination battles commencing.
No way. At this point the WH needs someone fresh and new. Someone who supports the party line but is able to do so without the antagonistic and arrogant style of Ashcroft. Oh, the nominee should also not have written bad songs like "Let The Eagle Soar."
All sorts of quotes come to mind about this, but most of them are by Hudson from Aliens. "Aw that great...just GREAT... NOW what the f___ are we supposed to do?!?!" "we're f_____n' doomed!" "We're on an express elevator to Hell, goin' down!" "That's it, man. Game over, man! Game over!"
If Gonzales is nominated, you'll see how right I am. He'll pass through easily and nobody will fillibuster.
I'm a bit surprised by this. Justice Thomas was in Atlanta a few days ago for the swearing in of Leah Sears as the first African-American Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. In one of the legal papers here in town, they interviewed him and he all but said none of his colleagues would be retiring this summer.
There can be differnt forms of standards in confirming AG and SC members. The AG is in office, at most, eight years. SC members serve until the quit or die. So, a lot more scrutiny is going to be in place if Gonzales is nominated. But, you may be right in the end, he probably would be the most acceptable guy to many Senate democrats.
Again just rumors, but the thought is that her husband is gravely ill. Her official reason: "O'Connor, in a separate one-sentence statement, cited her age and said she "needs to spend time" with family. She and her husband, John, a former classmate at Stanford, have three sons, Scott, Brian and Jay."
I HOPE you're wrong on Ashcroft. Gonzales looks like he might be OK. Who are the possible women? It seems to me that this will be a big consideration and I don't have enough knowledge of the federal judiciary to know who the reasonable choices might be. As a side note- I was floored when I read that O'Connor has been on the SC for 24 years and is 75. Impressive service especially since the pressures on her to vote with one bloc or the other must have been intense.
One other thing to point out is the fact that SC justices can turn out to be big suprises. Nobody ever thought that Warren would have been as much of a liberal when he was named Chief Justice, he was a very moderate politician. Souter has been the same, many considered him a conservative judge but he has moved to the left while on the court. Blackburn as well.
I want to see Justice Scalia moved to Chief Justice and Solicitor General Ted Olson nominated to replace O'Connor... mark my words: Solicitor General Olsen will be the next Justice!
Yeah, this works for me. Olson would be fine. I still think Bush may go with Thomas for Chief Justice, though.
I think O'Connor turned out more moderate than anyone expected. However, if Bush goes the way he has lately, he'll nominate someone whose conservative bona fides are impecable. A party line sort of person. The sort of person who is more likely to be stubborn than thoughtful.
I think she will go down as one of the better AJ in the history of the court. She was a very sensible justice during her time on the bench and she will be missed a lot.
Are you already assuming that Rehnquist is going to step down? Otherwise, Bush is not going to appoint ANYONE as Chief Justice.....kind of insulting to the man who currently holds the job don't you think?
