Maybe it's just my lack of faith in things Geracie, but I think he was being sarcastic.

Goodsie, what are you thinking? BlueMeanie is right:

"Only 50 days till opening day for the Quakes..." As if anyone cares...

    That's how I read it.

Big deal, the Quakes will last longer and be more successful and popular than he will. :)

50 is a nice, round number-- and it only gets smaller from here. :)

I see nothing wrong with that.

    "Dear Sports Editor:

As a long time, loyal reader of the Mercury-News, I feel obliged to tell you that the daily enjoyment I derive from your paper is being brought down by the needless and unsolicited sarcasm of Mr. Geracie's column. The same old bitter act grows tiresome over time (such as Glenn Dickey at your rival, the Chronicle.)

It would be greatly appreciated by your many patrons if you introduced a new, young writer who would offer a fresh perspective with less cynicism. Perhaps, Dylan Hernandez?

    Regards,

    Mr. 50-days-and-counting"

    sonofa--

I like where you're going with that. No mention of soccer whatsoever -- kind of like launching a guerilla campaign against the enemy.

Best of all, it's true. Here's a guy making his living by making fun of people. Don't people outgrow that kind of "humor" after puberty?

You've nailed it, Bajaro. Just a little sarcasm of my own for our amusement. Bud's stuff is o.k. in small doses. The Glenn Dickey patter is what really rubs me the wrong way. It's too easy to gain the spotlight by simply countering popular opinion. He's made a name by taking stances like "Good riddance, Joe Montana" and postures of that ilk. TOO EASY!!! That is just baiting the public into a game of contradiction through headlines.

I actually once worked in the same circles as Bud Geracie and he's not a bad guy at all. I like him. I just get tired of someone repeatedly kicking a team when they are...

    a.) down

b.) fighting the good fight to get up (a.k.a.- Quakes.)

If that were true, there'd be no US soccer supporters' groups ;)

His column reminds me of bad Andy Rooney,...

    ...and Andy Rooney sucks!

For those unclear on the concept, when Geracie made his sarcastic remark, he left off the end of the statement. He really wanted his item to read:

    * Only 50 days until opening day for the Quakes, after which our sports department's email inbox will be flooded by "concerned citizens" any time there is a perceived slight against their team. Since I'm lonely, I'm hoping to get some early feedback from those folks. IT department, please create a filter on our mail server that will automatically bin any incoming email that includes the words "Earthquakes," "Quakes," and/or "soccer" in the title or message body.

    ;)
