visited the quakes board. quakes fans are hopping mad. saying they'll not renew their season tickets!!!!

why not let america start a houston or san antonio team? could this selling of the mls champions be a problem rather than a solution?

Let's not jump the gun too much. Garber's quote when told of Teuffer's comments was "I'm pleased with Mr. Teuffer's optimism." I'd take that as a very nice way of saying Teuffer is being overly aggressive.

This whole issue came up apparantly, not because of any scheduled meeting or impending announcement, but because CA was in Spartan for the Inter-liga, and the Mercury-News journalist asked the question.

But anyway, it's thoroughly discussed on the Quakes boards:

that really sucks. I mean, if every San Jose season ticket holder decided not to renew, the earthquakes would sorely miss that fifty dollars.

Why don't you move to SJ and see how many people actually heard about this team for yourself.

Doesn't take much for MLS fans to say this apparently. I'm waiting for someone to say they're not goign to renew because they didn't get enough ice cubes in their soda at a game.

Losing your GM and the possibility of losing the identity of your team does not equal to not having enough ice cubes at a game.

Besides saying SJ fans a bunch of over reactionaries and now this. What are you trying to gain besides winding us up?

I'm just tired of whiney, bitchy, and self absorbed so called 'fans' of MLS. I swear to god a majority o fpeople on these boards care more about management and the game day expierence than they do the team's performance. It's like if the front office doesn't buy you a beer and a blow job then all of the sudden people have, "Been with MLS since day one and after ______ I'm not ever going to go again because ______. I've given too much time to _______. And I can't believe they're such morons and don't even care about the fans!!!" I'm just really tired of hearing it.

A league owned team that has had two names in 8 years, plays in a crappy stadium and draws relatively few fans is bitching about tradition and consistancy? Give me a freaking break, a new investor in MLS and all people can do is complain.

I admit I sometimes feel the same way....However, with the succession of news and the resignation of the GM, I cannot but feel the SJ fans are not being at least given the chance to keep their name (based on the speculations anyway)...If the Earthquakes name has been part of the soccer landscape in the area, then it should be kept....America (televisa) should be allowed to invest money, help with the stadium deal, but the name better be left alone....I do not think any of the current MLS teams would ever want to be renamed a Spanish sounding name, much less a Mexican club name

Hmm I'll keep that in mind the next time I read a "All the Names in MLS SUCK!!!" thread and there will be a suggestions for San Jose F.C. '96.

Well, it'd be nice to have the soccer tradition in this nation in order to name a soccer team the way many teams do worldwide (by city name)....Unfortunately MLS does not have the clout of the major US sports, which do not have the habit of naming themselves simply after a city either.....They all use nicknames for better or worse....
America is a bad name as it is (This is America, last time I went to school)...Now, if your Revs had to be renamed, please do tell what you would choose
    Atlante
    Cruz Azul
    Tigres
    Puebla
    Pachuca
    Necaxa
    Monterrey
    Chivas
    Santos
    Toluca
I'm sure any of these would make you just as happy as SJ fans feel about their prospective name.....

In this particular case, I think you're wrong. The problem is more serious than you think. Besides, not everyone thinks the same way you do. What's with this I am holier than thou attitude? Your comments are hurting, not helping.

This is not your average I-am-whining-about-little-things scenario. First of all, I happen to value management very highly. ALL chronically ill teams in American sports are due to incompetance at the top. I believe the success of a team starts from the top. Quiting itself is enough to upset some people. Also not too many people believe he really quits for personal reasons. Second of all, the team's name could have changed and maybe even moved. Yeah sure, there is nothing concrete, but when there is, it's too late.

The Chronically ill 2004 MLS Champions right? It's just always so perfect, go read soem of the letters to Garber... People will sit on here and bitcha nd bitch and bitch about how MLS should be doing more to market itslef, how they should be doing x,y, and z. But the second anybody makes a decision they're not comfortable with it's 'OBVIOUZLY YOU ONLY CARE ABOUT $$$ NOT THE FANZ!!!'

Crap like this happens all the time on other boards as well. Like I've said before, maybe it's just the medium we're communicating in, but with so many people claimign to be ready to abandon MLS over so many different things... maybe it's time for them to shut up about the failings of MLS and realize that maybe they're just not very good fans.

Again your are completely wrong. Your whining about whining is totally unjustified.

SJ WERE chronically ill until about they had a new coach and totally new management in place about 3 years ago. SJ fans are great fans. People who post on forums actually go to the game. The problem is that the attendance numbers were inflated during previous management, and very few people actually heard of the earthquakes. Nobody in my amature soccer team has heard of earthquakes, except one dude, but he told me he thought NASL has folded. How can soccer fans go to the game if they have never heard of them?

Ahh yes all positive foreign welcoming futbol fans. A dream MLS someday just might exist! Consider the possibilities....
    Dallas America USA
    Columbus America F.C. USA
Chivas USA F.C. (some city in the USA)
    Juan F.C. de Columbus USA
UNAM Pumas KC campus ext. USA
New England via Guadalajara F.C. USA
Chivas F.C. USA (again, in some city in the USA)
Atletico duhhhhh Los Angeles F.C. USA
Real, I mean REALLY real Colorado... F.C. USA
Chicago F.C. USA F.C USA REAL

Why the F would we want American team names in our American SOCCER league when we can have a totally raped image of some div. 2 Mexican league as our premier futbol, er I mean soccer league here?!?! I can't wait to see it.

How can so many people miss the story here? The amazing thing is that MLS convinced ANYBODY to invest in a franchise that considers 12K to 13K to be a good turnout. No wonder the league has no interest in maintaining THAT tradition.

That is obviously the case. HOWEVER, the league should not rush into getting investors from South of the border to rebrand teams. That is the last thing MLS should be doing. If there aren't investors yet, keep the ship as is. Slowly and maturely the league will grow, and the investors will come. Going for Chivas and America though, is doing it all wrong.

I agree completely. Names like Burn and Wiz and Clash are awful!!! Really, why would we want American team names?

You're exactly right KPAulson on agreeing with me. I actually saw the Wiz and the Clash play last season. Great game too! Oh wait, I mean the Wizards (not the NBA team NAMED the Wizards) and the newly renamed Earthquakes. Whoops! The Burn, well what do I know? I still like it.

Maybe. Or maybe it will introduce two teams that know how to market and it will strengthen the league. I don't have a perfect cristal ball, and neither does anyone else. What I DO know is this: two guys/organizations are willing to bet that it will work, and they are ready to put their money where their mouth is. If CA can make a go of it in San Jose, I say, "all the more power to them." Its a heck of a lot better for the league to rebrand than it would be to fold the club, as almost happened once before.

Plus, say CA comes in and tries certain things and falls flat on its face. Do you think Chivas will notice and alter its course of action? Then we'd have a better shot at 2 healthy franchises.

You're right-- Wizards is a great name. The Burn, the New York-New Jersey Metrostars, the Revs and the Crew. Fantastic American names.

We at BigSoccer may have grown to like names like the Metros, the Revs and the Crew, but like other stupid names from the past (like Knickerbockers), it takes time. These names still provoke derision from even MLS fans. "New" American sportsteam names (like the Power, the Burn or the Magic) really don't deserve any protection.
