Re: San Jose - Los Angeles (Saturday, 4/25/03) postgame thread [R]       No, actually I (unfortunately) had to be out of town for most of the day, but returned home only about half an hour or so ago. I caught the end of the game on the MLS Shootout Package.       I did record the whole game, though, so I'll be watching it shortly.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
San Jose - Los Angeles (Saturday, 4/25/03) postgame thread [R] I think the fishy bastard even almost got in a fight with one of the ball boys. He was yelling at him for not hurrying with the ball and kept glaring at him. What a punk
All hail the power of the magnetic schedule night! We have never lost a game on that day and we never will. I'm waiting for the excuses from the galaxy vermin about how it wasn't a penalty,we got robbed, etc,etc... I hope they enjoy their natural position in life, that of being beneath us, in the standings, in the state, in their lives.... What a sweet win, I hope they choke on it.
Well, it wasn't always pretty, but it was a deserved win. San Jose had the majority of the opportunities and were just unlucky to not have scored another goal. My evaluations: Onstad - Well, I laughed when he violently grabbed the ball away on a corner early in the first half; but it waws a pretty decent performance, no glaring mistakes (some bobbled balls) but he also wasn't tested much: B Dunivant - Todd did a pretty good job on the left-flank tonight, although Cobi did seem to be testing us alot from the left in the second half. He did a good job getting upfield but he also missed some good opportunities: B+ Agoos - Not too much shakiness and a combination of good and bad passes/clearances. The only thing I really like about Agoos is that he doesn't play like a typical MLS defender, meaning he won't just kick the ball out of bounds, instead he actually tries to help set up the offense: A- Dayak - Troy Dayak had a pretty solid evening. None of his clearances were poor, and he and Goose kept El Pescadito in check. Sure, there were some challenges, but there were few serious attacks by the Galaxy: A Waibel - Oh boy. Well, he had a decent night. No yellow cards, no glaring fouls (even with King of Fouls himself in the building) but again, no activity in the offense (he had a good chance on goal with a header in the first half.) The right side was the Galaxy's most busy offensively, but no goals allowed: B Corrales - Ramiro had a silently good evening winning balls, passing the ball upfield, and defending his fellow players on the field. A workman-like effort from Ramiro, but I could've expected a little more: B Lagos - Wow, I really wanted Ronnie back (who was still on crutches tonight) when Lagos totally missed a golden opportunity on goal in the second half. Otherwise, I was really surprised at how little I even thought about Lagos in this game. I'm looking forward to Ronnie's return: C+ Mulrooney - Mulrooney seemed to act like a holding midfielder tonight (and what was up with his cleats in the first half?) with little action up top; but he did an admirable job controlling the midfield. A quiet, but effective effort: B+ Brian Mullan - Mullan had a fair night, but he missed two great opportunities (at least) on goal. He always worked hard though, but that didn't mean much. Good work on the right side, particularly with crosses, but the failed opportunities were too obvious to give him an A: B Brian Ching - Well, this wasn't Ching's best or most productive night. He did take some of the defensive focus off of Landon and that was a good thing. He's continuing to do his job but he just doesn't have the ball skills to set up the offense, that has really become Donovan's role: B- Donovan: Great job tonight, but he still wasn't quite digging in. However, Ching and co. took some of the focus off of Donovan up top giving him a few opportunities. That missed cross with Mullan was just a fourth of a second to soon: A- The ref was decent, but the penalty kick call looked like the right call from where I was sitting. Oh, and Tyrone Marshall is a hack. What's up with Simon Elliot?
Great job explaining why he was so bad, and why the penalty shouldn't have been called. I had always thought a complete head-lock was illegal but it appears that I'm mistaken. I thought Mulrooney did a great job, and I do agree (despite what my rating would give him, which is based more on his performance in his position than anything else) that he was Man of the Match. Oh, and about Simon, what a bunch of wimpy shots and pointless complaints. Galaxy fans: What is wrong with Elliot? He played well for you guys last year...
Yeah, he was the bitch flopping on the field and crying to the ref all night. What a punk, just like most of the galaxative fans.(see above post). It's too bad they troll here, maybe a bus will hit them collectively and put them out of our misery.
A few comments: - Hartman was MOTM in my opinion. - I thought Ching looked pretty good. Good run on the corner to hit the post in the first half. Perhaps he should have buried it, but he did good just to get there. - Was it me or were there a lot of bad passes by the Quakes tonight? - LA is a good team. They don't necessarily keep good shape but they ALWAYS have a ton of bodies behind the ball. I'm not even sure what you call that formation, maybe 3-4-3 but the 4 mids were all like d-mids in position and skill. It makes for ugly soccer, but that seems to be MLS 2003 for some reason. - I thought the Korean guy (Bo or Ho?) looked good. - What was up with that group of Quake fans in the southwest corner? They were loud and raucous but just couldn't stop using the F word and the guards were all over them as a result. On one hand I can understand because they are young and liquored up and its Saturday and time to have fun, but on the other hand if you're like me and there with your kid you half want to go over and stick a cork in them. It's OK to push the margins a bit and yell "LA sucks" or whatever but the "fxck LA" was over the top. - Overall the atmospher was lively with them, the normal Quakes cheering section in the north end zone which was huge tonight and then to their credit a big loud group of LA fans. - Ruiz was dangerous every time he got the ball. So was Donovan. - Corrales can sort of get away with white cleats because he is Latino ... but Agoos? Fortunately for Goose his play is stellar enough in MLS he can wear pink ones and that would be fine. - Waibel is horrid with the ball but he's a good and tough marker. Onstad on the other hand is frightening. I'd say he's a train wreck waiting to happen but I guess it did happen last week. He's also just too darn slow. - Overall, a good and deserved win for the Quakes. They were the better team tonight.
The old baseball saying truly is universal...the beer does taste better after a win. I can't recall a more comprehensive win by the boys in blue over LA-LA-Land. Onstad was steady and quietly effective...he didn't have to be otherwise because the back-line and midfield seemed to squelch most Galaxy offensive threats. It appears as though we'll have to adjust a cool and calm goalkeeper instead of the firebrand that was Joe Cannon. Often times that calm was well placed in icing the desperate Galaxy attack. Enjoyed the byplay between the Galaxians/Riot Squad and Titan Boys and The Casbah. It's amazing how "BEAT LA" sounds so much like another cheer... Was that Ruiz I saw on the 3-meter springboard? Loved the way Brian Mullan torched Sasha Victorine at the drop of a hat tonight. Troubling that we're still struggling scoring from the run of play...but I like the way the pieces are starting to fit. The chemistry may take some time to develop -- as they said in the greatest baseball movie ever made ("Bull Durham")..."it's a long season and you've just gotta trust it".
Good win by the Quakes, but they should have finished a few more of their chances. Mullan, Ching and Donovan all missed pretty good opps. Luckily, so did Ruiz. It's no wonder that Onsted never before made it to MLS. The guys looks real nervous out there. Must have been at least 5 bobbled shots or header, pretty easy ones too. Conway better get better soon, or Frank is going to have to find a goalie. LA is a pretty pedestrian team. I don't see where the forecasts for league dominations are coming from. Solid, yes. Spectacular, no. When Albright is your second forward and Cobi your only creative force in midfield/wing, you are not going to score a lot of goals. I see lots of tight games for LA this year. Too bad we did see Alvarez tonight. Guess we needed to hold down the lead. Dunivant was schooled at will by Cobi tonight in the second half. Fortunately, Cobi can't cross the ball . . . The Quakes really miss Graziani, much as it pains me to say it.
Waibel is not an outside back. He can't play the ball with his feet. He might be okay at center back. Ruiz almost scored when he went to the ground and missing the tackle, and Dayak overran Ruiz. That was not a good moment for our defense. I am very nervous watching Onstad. LA is a very good team. They should put more bodies forward. They were very dangerous when they started attacking late in 2nd half. Before that they just defend with everyone and punt the homerun ball to Ruiz and pray. I am glad it didn't work, or the league will be too sad to watch.
Great win! The guys looked really pumped tonight and came out with a bang. What ya guys think of Mulrooney putting the thump on Ruiz at the beginning?! Awesome! Hats off to our back line. Dayak and Agoos held it together and Dunivant had a good game. At least Waibel didn't get a yellow. Onstad scares the crap out of me. Too much hesitation and bobbling the ball. I liked Ching's play tonight, I just wish he would shoot the stinking ball. There seemed to be too much cute play inside the 18 and not enough shots on goal. Dayak is my MOTM. Solid Defense! Not a bad start and to beat LA is.....SWEET! I hope the Riot Squad enjoys their long ride home. They came a long way just to lose! The Rally Tunnel was great! LA Sucks! Go Quakes!
I think everyone's being a bit hard on Onstad. Sure, we had our moments upstairs where we were all holding our breath. But as the match progressed those nervous moments came less and less. He was much more aggressive tonight chasing the high balls, confidently securing them in his hands (for the most part...not 100% but nothing given away in a dangerous situation), and was sure on his one punch attempt. Granted, he wasn't severely tested tonight, and he did look a bit like falling timber saving one attempt late in the first half, but overall I thought he was solid and much improved. Not spectacular, mind you, but solid enough to keep a clean sheet with plenty of help from a rugged back-four performance.
I'm watching (well I should say listening to - background noise) the tape of the game. The Casbah sounds freakin awesome! I'm not sure what was different tonight. But you all sound awesome. I've got to get myself back in there!
Just wanted to share Cowboy's comment after the game: "Ruiz who?" He was very happy with the way they pretty much erased that fish from the game. And I was really happy to see him playing as strong as ever! Great job!
Hmmm. The evil, stinking, filth playing with four d-mids? What's up with that? You'd think they had college coach or something. Why no creative players for the scumbags? What about Cienfuegos? or Chacon? They didn't even bring them. Pathetic dweebies. Thanks for the match reports guys. I haven't seen the match yet. But someone is sending me a tape!! GO QUAKES!! - Mark
