The final score in the first round of this season's edition of the MLS Heritage Cup is: 2 - 1 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G P.S. = Please don't post results of other soccer (including MLS) games and other sports' games in this thread until at least 24 hours after they've ended.
When Seattle scored, I was thinking, ********, I wasted a lot of time watching this game. Thanks, quakes, for changing my mind. Do all the analyzing you want, but one thing is unarguable: this is incredible entertainment.
Unbelievable end AGAIN!!! Not the best performance, but, what the heck.... Still just enjoying the ride.
I'm happier we crushed Sounders fans' spirits than for getting a win. I just knew we could get the winner even though we collapsed in stoppage time. Question: why the hell did Watson only use ONE sub? He didn't even sub in just to kill the click at the end. Wtf? Terrible, stupid coaching decision. We are talking BASICS here. The tie was going to be all on him, he better buy Lenhart a nice dinner, he saved him from looking like a moron. Can't blame him though, he must have gotten his subbing strategies straight from Yallop! I felt like I was watching last years Quakes this game.
certainly looked to me like Scott shoved Bernardez pretty good on their goal. The kind of shove Lenny gets called on all the time on. But that sounds like something a Shittle fan would bitch about, so happy it ended up not mattering. Pretty even game and great resilience to stick with it again.
watson was using the 2011 playbook where we bunkered with a single goal lead, didn't sub, and blew the lead at the end of the game
And, since I'm talking to myself, the crowd didn't get into the game until after seattle scored. Sad.
Lenny was SO motm tonight. Not just for the winning goal, but for his great target play, getting back to clear high crosses out of our own box, and just his general hustle. It's too bad we couldn't have gotten another goal or two. Wondo was a little off, but everybody in our midfield played very well. Dawkins got predictable the way he kept cutting into the middle with the ball, but he was still efficient in terms of helping us keep our attacks building. Chavez is just amazing (worth the price of admission all on his own). He was as dangerous tonight as I've ever seen him. Pretty consistent game from our back four, despite giving up some chances against a good opponent. Not sure why we were playing so much long ball out of the back (especially against Seattle), but it worked out okay. Did I mention that Lenny was motm?
We could say that about Jon Busch and his mindless clearances that lead to back to back Seattle attacts, the second one resulting in them scoring...
Busch is not without flaws but id still take him over plenty of other keepers in the league. plenty of tread left on those tires as far as MLS quality goes.
Incredible game and evening. Got to sit in VIP section on the pitch! What can you say about this team? What a difference a year makes! Bobby Convey eat your heart out!
I am home now so can type a sentence with correct punctuation. That is, if I don't end up with a hangover from the free coconut water with acai and pomegranate that they were handing out after the game. Nasty stuff. For the most part, that was just not a very good game. The Quakes had their offensive spurts, but almost everyone seemed a beat off. When the camera showed closeups of Lenny, he looked tired and headachy, and being mauled by Scott and others could not have helped. I didn't get a good view on the fouls that drew yellows for Muma and Justin, but there was some pretty egregious and persistent fouling from Seattle, and the guy who finally got a yellow, #5, was the least of the offenders. I was in the middle of the west side, closer to the Sounders fans than to the Ultras. I spent a lot of time trying to follow the Ultras' cues and I found that once I started screaming and clapping, people around me we catch on, but then when I stopped, they stopped. I felt like I was carrying the whole section and if I caught a breath, I'd start hearing stupid Sounders chants ("nobody likes us and we don't care" Never mind that they were setting off smoke bombs and flipping off the Quakes' fans, but we knew coming in that they were a clever and classy bunch.) As I said before, it wasn't until after Seattle scored that I really felt an upsurge of intensity. I've experienced it in a few other games -- the crowd was willing the team to go for it, and god bless Sheamerica, it happened. So. Did they take away Frank's cell phone too? No way he could text "take out Chavez and Baca!" to someone who might have been able to make it happen? To give credit to Seattle, they did a tremendous job defending us. I expect our coaching team will be studying that tape to get some clues before we meet again. And to give extra points to our fans, when Johnson got subbed on, I was not the only person booing as loudly as I could. At least he wasn't the one who scored.
we needed to push for a second goal the last 10 minutes, not try to play keep away and boot ball. so low when they scored, but in the end, it was un****en believable! in your face, FC Man Boobs!
mark watson what are you doing? we get the lead after pounding them for 15 minutes and then we back off and bunker...and only 1 sub?! were we trying to lose the game....... great job team and lenny for bouncing back, go quakes!
Hey, that's me! I'm the big doof just above Lenny's arm in this picture, rocking my 2001 quakes jersey. I got a high 5 from Lenny right after this picture was taken, to go along with my pregame high 5 from Wondo. Now I can die.
A tie would have been a fair result... We were lucky. The biggest issue I saw all game was our defense playing way too deep. Seattle exploited that all game long. Second issue was trying to force the ball up the middle too often... Wasn't yallo quoted with trying to stop our wide play? Third, poor finishing on both sides. Fourth, we barely beat seattles b team. If we pay ths way in the play offs, it will be a short run. Third
