Well I think those signings were Bruce’s doings. But the signing of Bruce, and making him sporting director also, was smart - the first smart thing we’ve done in a long time. I don’t think our salary spend is really any more than last year, not to any significant degree anyway. Josef’s not a DP and Arango replaced Gruezo as DP.
I think Fisher wanted to add an air of legitimacy to what he was doing in SJ (so as to fetch top dollar), which is why he brought in Arena and greenlighted a couple of good players.
He’s been trying to add an air of legitimacy for a while, including the hiring of Matias, etc. but nothing really fit until the Bruce hire.
That part of it does indeed seem a bit odd. But still, if the new owner or ownership group decides to take Mayor Mahan up on his offer and builds a new SSS in downtown San José — and this time without bending over backwards to cut every corner they possibly can in both the planning and construction phases — then I won’t complain. Then the current stadium could become The Town FC’s and (if they don’t choose to build their own stadium elsewhere) Bay FC’s permanent home. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
I agree that hiring Matias was a good step towards legitimacy, but the austerity measures (that followed) crippled any hope of building a competitive roster for him to work with, so there was that. This to me looks like Fisher trying to build up the team (a little) for sale. He's keenly aware of how he's perceived among sports fans in the Bay Area, I'm sure.
Well it’s also possible that he was waiting for a bit of an upswing before putting the team up for sale. In another thread or earlier in this thread I listed all the reasons why the timing makes sense for him (even outside of presumably needing the money for that dumb Vegas ballpark). Here it is: 1) He's already made like 30x on his investment. It's's already a huge rake. 2) He's "selling high", at least at a relative high, because: Messi is in the league (what happens when he leaves)? The AppleTV deal is still ongoing but with a questionable future The WC is coming with a lot of hope, but there's a risk it's a dud for the US, given nats team struggles, and political uncertainties It's getting more and more expensive to "keep up with the Jones's" in MLS. Operating costs are increasing, and I don't think he's getting revenue increases to cover. The stadium is still fine, but may need upgrades in the coming years. He's currently got the most successful ever American coach, and the team is in a relatively rare respectable state.
and he doesn't have to pay for an academy training facility, so we're right back to square #1 on that. so yeah, wonderful that he can rake in so much $$$ off the backs of Quakes fans, after screwing everyone over for so long.
To be fair, he lost money on Quakes fans. But the underlying asset exploded in value. No thanks to anything he did.
San José Mayor Matt Mahan was interviewed this morning on the Today In The Bay set on NBC Bay Area (KNTV Channel 11). The full interview can be viewed here (discussion about the Earthquakes begins at about the 6:40 minutes mark). GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Lived in Cole Valley for years, too. Kezar is not a realistic SF option, as dope as it would be for SF residents. The most realistic SF option I can fathom is Stonestown getting raised and a stadium built there, but that would be in like 7 to 10 years. That or building by the Warriors stadium.
Stonestown is the liveliest (only?) mall in the city these days. Those Asians sure do love their boba and udon and soufflé pancakes.
That wouldn’t help the San Jose Earthquakes rightfully stay in San José and would displace the Golden State Warriors. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Just put in a motorized roof and basketball floor. The Bay Area is know for innovation world wide: first multi-use soccer/basketball stadium.
One thing that can be said about them is they at least appear to be ambitious. They also have an infrastructure geared towards soccer with the Leeds United purchase. Having a “sister club” could be advantageous for developing players for higher levels than MLS. Loaned players from Leeds would be pretty cool as well. Just saying….
I once saw the 49ers at Kezar. This was the mid ‘60’s. Parking was absurdly bad, and I was 8 or 9? Even then, I thought it was a absurdly bad place for a stadium. And the people who lived in the neighborhood were pissed. (Whether they should have been or is another matter.) Anyway, it sucked. Hope I never see another game there. Go Quakesfans!!
Still comparing apples to oranges. R and R bought a team for a couple million and put a few million more into it. And the Championship is a totally different creature than League 1. That Wrexham team that was second in League 1 would be Wooden Spoon contenders in MLS. The Quakes will sell for few hundred million at least. You think there are a couple of Hollywood actors who can afford that? John Fisher bought the Quakes for $20 million, but, was worth a couple of billion. It was just a small percentage of his net worth.
Jesus ********ing christ, dude. I was making a what was supposed to be a humorous anecdotal comment with the reference to Rob and Ryan, but it either went over your head or even sadder - somebody has beaten the sense of humor out of you at some point...
