The final score is: 1 - 1 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G P.S. = Please don't post results of other soccer (including MLS) games and other sports' games in this thread until at least 24 hours after they've ended.
That really should have been three points for the Quakes... but at least we are attacking more lately...
69' - LA - Giovani dos Santos (Steven Gerrard)=$4,250,000.00+$6,132,500.00 =$10,382, 500! 90' - SJ - Chad Barrett (Shea Salinas)=$95,500.00+$166,458.33=$261,958.33
No. But that is the limit of what Klinsmann's conspiracy against San Jose can accomplish. They will do better in the future.
It felt good to yell at LA again. Just read through the pbp thread and yeah, the reffing was pretty bad. Johnny Two Saints and Jelly Van Damme should have seen red, but I'm not sure why Cole got red late - did Stott mess up? I mean, more than he already had?
I think going forward, we're in deep, deep trouble from no center backs....at all. Wynne barely gets by next to Muma. But Wynne is too short and not really a center back. This a flat out disaster.
Unfortunately, the Two Saints goal was a failure of marking and positioning, rather than a result of lack of CB size.
Back from the game. I feel kinda sick, and it's not from the stadium food. If there's one game you want to win in the regular season, it's this one, and with the U.S. military behind you, how can you not? For every nifty move the Quakes made, they had a gaffe to balance it out. You know, if three guys are going to leave the opponent's # 10 open in the box, he deserves to score. It's a teaching moment. Amazing to me that with so much talent on their team, LA readily resorts to two-handed shoving, flying elbow slams, and dangerous tackles. Why is that necessary when your team is loaded with international stars? Arena should ask Gerrard to do his dirty work instead of that thug Van Damage... in Quakes games Gerrard seems to have complete immunity. Good thing for us Gerrard doesn't really seem to have that mindset. Can't get out of my mind how many times Stott walked upfield to try and get the red-carded Cole to actually depart (I took a quick peek at my recording of the game, and I'm pretty sure it didn't capture all of the referee's attempts). All the while LA players are screaming in Stott's face. I guess they feel they're too important a team to be subjected to such inconveniences. Blah.
We had the best seats we've ever had at Stanford -- 2nd row, center line. The bottom section is elevated so we had a much better view of the field than from our second row seats in the moat. I will have to watch the video to see what really happened as we missed out on a lot of the action, like how did Muma get hurt? The most striking aspect of the game overall was how much LA was allowed to foul -- holding, grabbing, throwing guys down, elbow to the face, hardly any of it called. Poor sportsmanship. Stott just stood there. The incident with Cashley at the end exemplified this. You eject a player, he refuses to leave, so you just walk back to the ball and expect play to continue? That stoppage was over 8 minutes by my timer (and much of that wasted by LA). We were both unlucky and lucky. Unlucky with balls that hit the crossbar, lucky with LA shots that would have gone in if not for a defender saving them as Bingham was otherwise occupied. Fans: with 50,000 people, most of whom do not normally attend games, you get a mixed assortment at Stanford. I saw a bunch of LA fans other than those sitting in their section, some Gerrard fans with Liverpool kits, Warriors gear, Stanford jerseys -- and not a lot of people who were clearly there as Quakes fans. The foursome next to us arrived late and seemed to take offense at all the cheering. I'm sure there must have been some real soccer fans who wouldn't have minded those seats, but I didn't tell them that. Any game vs LA where DeJong doesn't break anyone's bones is a victory of sorts.
That stadium gets really really loud. I know that there's a lot more people but it just seems like 3-4x as loud as Avaya ever gets :-(. There was great energy the last 20 minutes when it seemed like that goal was coming. And then I thought there might be another one, but it didn't happen due to a combination of LA time wasting and wasted crosses by the likes of Francis and Salinas. To his credit, though Salinas hit some good dead balls tonight. Barrett might have had a hat trick on another night - two posts and a goal. Dawkins needs to get his shots on frame. Way, way too many shots this season over the bar - like almost all of them.
glad quakes at least got a point...this game could of gone so many ways....LA could of been up 2-0 or 3-0 at the half....or the quakes could of won the game 3-1....oh well.... we were happy with our seats in 113 row S, similar to our Avaya seats....seemed a lot of people are not regular soccer fans, to many people getting up and down during the game blocking the view.... Big Vic gets hurt and 3 of our backups are hurt (Goodson, Colvey & Andreas), that sucks. Was hoping for a goal or 2 from Dawkins and maybe one from QA. Down a goal in the closing stages and Adam Jahn comes in.....was hoping TT was going to make an appearance and be the hero but no such luck....and our million dollar man warms up on the sideline and never sees any action.......and that speaks volumes about our beloved GM.... Will nice to get Wondo back, even with his return, no so sure Quakes will be a playoff team....maybe something good will happen when transfer window opens......(wishful thinking on my part)
Francis was worse than Dawkins at shooting. So those of us in the stadium saw the LA goalkeeper yank Quincy down twice. The first time was maybe incidental, the second time, you could see on the replay, was not -- he just grabbed him around the legs and brought him down. In the Galaxy view of the world (checked their board) Quincy was at fault! Also, apparently ACB got tossed. Good work, Stanford security!
and so they have the bag policy implemented.....I did not bring a bag in....went through the gate and was never searched/screened by security.....what a joke....no wonder a smoke bomb went off inside the stadium..would of been really easy to bring stuff into that stadium tonight......
I think the answer to the question "why is that necessary" is: it isn't necessary, but they get away with it because they get coddled by the refs, so they don't need to play with skill - they can just shove away and not get called for it, and if other teams shove them back, the other teams get carded. Just rewatching the end - after Dos Santos got his yellow card, he does an NFL-style shoulder charge into Alashe - no card. What a load of crap.
TT and Barrett look a little bit similar from a distance - just in the "white guy with short hair cut" way, and given my bad eyesight, so I thought it was TT who was going to go in for Muma. That way they don't have to do a triple switch - Dawkins can stay at forward. He (TT) looked like he knew he was not going into the game warming up late - he was not going very hard. He was going to be after Salinas, and after Jahn, and probably after Cato, which means no play. Jahn looked pretty good out there - didn't look too slow and going up hard for headers. He even had a really nice pillow feet sequence where he was dancing around with the ball in midfield , like a giraffe with ballet shoes (caught a photo of it - below). But then he gave it away... :-(
Major snafu with the tickets as I noted earlier. We had our STH, but at most of the gates, they could not read the Ticketmaster tickets. So they sent everyone to the south gate -- which had a long, long line. For all the "increased security" you could have brought in just about anything as long as you didn't put it in a bag.
There was one play toward the end of the game where offsides had already been called, and then their goalie tripped up Quincy.
Gerard tackle caused him to get stuck in the ground with his plant foot which was literally then at a right angle for the ankle vs the knee. I'm doubtful he'll be back any time soon.
