the Total Soccer Show podcast had Jeff Rueter on and he gave a great analysis on how Vancouver beat Miami. He said Miami traded away the younger players who were doing all the running for Suarez and Messi, a couple forwards, and the guy who was Busquet’s dog and doing all his defensive work and tackles. Rueter said Miami went instead for older more technical players. So it made me think the quakes could win the May-14 game, they just need a couple good fast guys in the middle and not be intimidated by Miami’s quality. I don’t know why the podcast is showing me 2 links for the same episode… https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podca...ague-epl-and-more/id327466681?i=1000706521048 https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podca...ague-epl-and-more/id327466681?i=1000706558126
Next match: the BIGGEST game in the Bay Area this spring ‼️Presented by @paypal— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) May 8, 2025 GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
They may be feeling the heat from 2 bad losses in a row, and looking to beat up on a minnow. We may not be so easy to beat. But OTOH, I would guess that whatever they planned to do with Messi had already been decided, and was not contigent on what happened in the Minnesota game?
The Quakes are flying high after beating the Timbers and CRapids and Miami is at a low point after losing 4-1 to Minnesota but I wouldn't put too much into it. Miami can strike at any time with Messi & Co. and get back into any game. They lost to Vancouver in the CCC and then came right back and beat the NYRB 4-1 who just blew out the Gals 7-0 yesterday so who knows what will happen. This league is a trip.
Beckham: "Be elegant in triumph" Also David Beckham (OK, that was a loss for him, but fighting a mascot, really?).

So seems likely or confirmed that Messi is here. My guess is that he subs in. They probably want to rotate their squad a little, and probably figure they won't need him to start in order to beat us. Also possible that they build up enough of a lead that they don't bother subbing him in. That would of course burn all of the Messi ticket buyers. BTW Suarez missed the Minnesota game due to a migraine reportedly. So he'll probably start Wednesday night.
He indeed is here JUST IN: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami have arrived in San Jose.If Messi appears in Wednesday’s match against the San Jose Earthquakes, it would mark his second career appearance in the Bay Area—his first coming in a 2009 FC Barcelona friendly against Chivas at Candlestick Park.… pic.twitter.com/3h0LickCYd— Favian Renkel (@FavianRenkel) May 11, 2025
You can now listen to today’s Chris Wondolowski interview on KNBR 680 regarding this game starting at the 9:23 minutes mark here (preceded by some pre-interview banter starting at the 3:09 minutes mark if you’re so inclined). GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Holy cow! Wondo sounded like he'd just guzzled a gallon of coffee. He was *amped*. Maybe he was coached to hype the game as much as possible. Those hosts are actually not idiots, and they were also apparently coached to mention, at the end, that the Quakes are the highest scoring team in the league, and also to mention the Stanford game against LAG and the Levi's game against LAFC. They even used the phrase Quakes marketing hype "biggest schedule in Quakes history".
