Would be a great game for Marvin Chavez to prove to his former team they did wrong in getting rid of him in exchange for allocation money.....
With a short week, it's a given that "captain" Corrales will be starting. That means one of Chavez or Salinas will be on the bench. Too bad, because we are much better with both on at the same time. The only guy that really worries me on Dallas is Brek Shea. He was getting too many open looks at goal last time we played them. I think we will shut them out again if he doesn't get to influence the game too much.
If "captain" Corrales will be starting then he will be take Salinas' spot because Chavez was awesome last night.
While I think the team is much stronger with speed on both wings, I can understand if Yallop puts Corrales in to start Wednesday so some guys get rest before the Sunday game in Vancouver. I would have said to put Corrales in a left back and put Hernandez on the bench, but Jason has played very well the last two games and the defense has gotten two shutouts in a row, so it's hard to argue for a change. Although I still think the team is much better with Morrow and Bernardez in the middle, Jason typically makes a couple of mistakes a game where he leaves a man unmarked and gives up a goal or a good chance. Even if Lenhart is available for Wed, I hope that they just use him as a sub and bring him back slowly. At this point it's much more important for him to be healthy down the stretch. Dawkins looked really good as a sub last night, he could also get a start Wed if someone needs rest. I also think maybe Yallop starts Khari in the midfield and gives Baca a rest, he's played a lot of minutes and it would be good to have him fresh for Sunday's game in Vancouver. So, considering the rest factor, here's a lineup I wouldn't mind seeing: Gordon -- Wondo Dawkins -- Stephenson -- Corrales -- Chavez Morrow -- Hernandez -- Bernardez -- Beitashour Busch
I hope Salinas gets to start again. That was the best he's played since the Marquez injury. When he plays well, we smoke teams
I normally would agree, but Dawkins was also very good. Maybe he shined a little more than he would have had the team not been up a man and playing extremely well, but I liked what I saw. Not that Salinas was poor because he absolutely wasn't. But another congested week means some things will probably get shuffled around again. Man, all of this schedule congestion has made predicting line-ups one of the harder endeavors for fans this year.
It's weird and unsettling that both times we'll have played Dallas this year are in the middle of a week in which both teams have three games. It makes it rather difficult to really objectively look at this game, because both teams will need to keep some reserves in the tank for games on the weekend. Interestingly, Dallas are coming off their first away win of the season, so either they're going to be very high or we'll see a big letdown. Either way -- should be worth watching! However, given the late kickoff, I may have to call in....<cough! cough!> on Thursday...
The good news for the Quakes is that they are almost through their tough part of the schedule - they dealt with the long road trip (and even longer time away from Buck Shaw), and after the Dallas a game they only have one more midweek game the entire year, and that's not until late September. After playing 9 games in 33 days through July 22, they will then only play 6 games over the next 54 days (7 games if you count the Swansea friendly). So they get a chance to rest up and get healthy over the next 2 months, while many other teams will still be dealing with fixture congestion (particularly LA, RSL and Seattle, who are in the CCL). Over the same 54 days that the Quakes play 6 games, Seattle plays 11, and LA and RSL each play 10.
I like Dawkins' play a lot, but I think I prefer to see Salinas hustle and get around the corners of defenses. Even if he misses up his cross, it causes all kinds of defensive issues, including the likelihood of own goals. His assist on Wondo's second last night was the perfect example. Dawkins doesn't do that. He wants to cut into the center of the field. We are leading the MLS in header goals. Let's use Salinas, Chavez, Morrow and Beita to get to the end lines and unbalance defenses. We don't have to flight every cross. We can cut some back to the penalty spot, hit some on the ground in the 6 yard box, ect. After we torture teams with that, bring in Dawkins to take it up the gut and shred the center defense.... That's just nasty to defend.
I agree that Dawkins looked good last night, but keep in mind that he had a lot of space to exploit as he entered the match after Beckerman had already been sent off. It was an ideal scenario for a player like Dawkins who prefers to run at people and take them on one-on-one.
I think that is definitely the best strategy and would prefer that every game, my concern, though, was about the schedule again. Are Salinas and Chavez both capable of starting again with only two days off? Chavez didn't play 90, so he should be able to start again. I think Salinas is capable, also, but I'm just offering up the possibility that we may see some changes purely based on having to play another game so quickly.
On the off chance that someone has 4 tickets to the mid week game that want to give away, send me a PM.
When we're rested we're a freakin' juggernaut, when we're tired we play down to the level of our opponents. I'm not expecting us to administer any serious ass-whoopings on Wednesday but a victory should be forthcoming.
