That’s awesome, 3 cheers for you, Jazzy! One good thing about being so much older than every other woman on the field, is that they kept telling me I was a role model. For what, I’m not sure … maybe just perseverance. I do have a huge list of injuries from playing soccer, but I’m still running (tho not very far or fast). I do tell people tho, that playing soccer saved my life back then because I lost weight and my cholesterol and blood sugar really went down. Of course, those went back up after I stopped playing.
62 years old and still playing 4x a week. Played in the annual Sacramento tournament this past April in the Over-60 division. The Over-70's played 4 Saturday games and at least 2 that Sunday!! They are my heroes and hoping I can still be playing at that age. My knees, however, have been holding meetings that I have not been invited to. Wondering what they have been discussing...
I was 6-7 years old when my best friends mom (who was born in Germany) drove us to the local park in her VW bug and tossed a soccer ball on the ground and said, "start kicking this around". That ignited a love for the sport that has raged for over 55 years. I was fortunate when very young to have a coach from Hungary who escaped in the 1956 Uprising, being shot at as he fled across the border with his brother, and then a coach from the Netherlands who idolized Ajax, named us after the team, and outfitted us in the famous Ajax red and while stripe kit.
Lucky you. I'm still pissed that I spent most of my "sports youth" standing out in center field or sitting in the dugout when I could have been running around a grass field kicking a ball. Oddly enough I think ultimate frisbee was my gateway drug to soccer. When I started playing ultimate I realized how much I liked running and playing a flowing game.
My parents wouldn’t allow me to play pointy-ball, so I played soccer in high school instead. I could have been a teenage Jack Lambert but was relegated to ride the bench in a sport that required skill as opposed to size, speed and ferocity. Nonetheless, I developed an appreciation for the skill and stamina involved, which inoculated me against the American disdain for the pinko game from abroad.
Speaking of older people still playing, I just came across this article about Jude Bellingham’s father, who was a police officer. He scored 700 goals in the lower leagues, his 700th coming at age 40. https://www.thesun.co.uk/sport/24455329/who-jude-bellinghams-parents/
Someone should do a video gal-in-the-street survey of Bay FC fans in the concourse asking if they have ever heard of FC Gold Pride. Good for some chuckles, I'm sure.
To give Kaitlyn an idea of what 1975 dinosaurs looked like , here are three images from eyewitnesses: ****************************
Thanks, Don. It is obvious who the real cutie is here, and who it is who needs to come with his own "unsee" switch ankle bracelet.
Funny thing - my son is about three years younger than that bunch and played for Walt Hix’s and KevinMcCarthy’s Central Valley select team for several years. They would sometimes scrimmage the Mercury as U12s or so, but Philippe put an end to that after a couple of times because the younger boys routinely curb-stomped the U 15 or 16 Mercury girls.
Actually, I thought that this was one of the better games that the Quakes played this season. Just their finishing let them down. Happens in soccer. Both teams played well with good movement and crisp passing compared to some of the earlier games in the season where both teams just passed the ball to the other team. Unfortunately, we had a few off nights with Espinoza and Hernan. The last attempt were both hit the bar defined their night. Jebo and Yuell had a good games. The Quakes goal was a real team effort starting all the way in the back. The Austin goal was also a team effort. From Gruezo stupid foul to the lack of marking in the middle. The team is just messed up mentally, along with a few players who are just poor (Gruezo, Akapo this game, Yuell and Rodrigues in others). Oh well, on to New York. It would have been a nice game to travel to...
You were the only person in the stadium who acknowledged my Gold Pride tee when I wore it to a Bay FC match earlier this season.
Ned, now I understand why you are so a loyal devoted fan! I remember how Central Valley Mercury teams dominated District 2 CYSA for quite a few years under Philippe Blin. I also remember how Ronnie & Lorrie Fair used to play AYSO in the Los Altos area. My boss’ daughter was on that team, and he said the Fair twins scored all the goals, even from the other half of the field.
