Meanwhile the Quakes signed Cornell grad Wilson Eisner to an HG contract, a guy that doesn’t look good enough to start for The Town. :facepalm

https://yscofficial.beehiiv.com/p/2425-preseason-academy-rankings 6. San Jose Earthquakes The San Jos Earthquakes have an argument to be even higher on this list. They have incredibly talented 2007s and 2009s. Their 2008 group is not too far behind with the likes of Chance Cowell who has already signed a pro contract with the club. The 2007 class is headlined by Tomo Allen and Rohan Rajagopal. Rohan has signed a contract while Allen is headed Stanford next year. The 2009 class is was good as it gets. Despite the loss of Marcelo Alvalos, they still have a ton of talent headlined by Kaedren Spivey and Will Ostrander. Rating: 9.2/10
This is a talented group, will be interesting to see if Cowell and Tan make the U-17 World Cup roster... https://www.ussoccercollective.com/us-youth-national-teams/u17-usynt-jezek-cup-2024-tournament-recap Oliver Tan has been the newer addition to this team and I thought he had a really nice set of games. He is known as an attacking full-back and oftentimes plays as a winger for his club, but in this tournament he showed that he is also an above average 1v1 defender. He has the best physical profile of the three and probably the highest ceiling. ... The United States got next to zero production from the center-forward position in this tournament. The only true number nine, Chase Adams, was very quiet and the other players that deputized there, Vitaliy Hlyut and Chance Cowell, did not do much when playing as a nine.
Is Oliver Tan part of our academy or not? I read that he was playing for the Quakes in the GA Cup as a "guest player". I don't know what that means exactly. Does it mean he's just biding his time with us before the inevitable leaving to join RSL or some other club? :facepalm
Losing another top talent to RSL. Chris Leitch is a failure. I heard it's done. 150K to San Jose for HG rights.— Marcus Chairez | US/SC (@USSoccerColl) September 15, 2024
Never good to lose a talented player from our academy but how many times have we “lost Owen Anderson to RSL” now?
The new MLS Academy protected lists came out today. One thing that shocked me in this update, but maybe should not have, is further evidence of the level of incompetence within the San Jose Earthquakes organization, from top to bottom. No academy has lost more talent from their academy over the last couple of years. They preside in an immensely talent rich territory and yet they only protected three players of a possible nine within their region. Every club has the option to claim the rights of nine U15 aged players or above within their region that are not currently at their academy. Whether you like this rule or not, I do not, clubs would be wise to take advantage of it. I wish I could say that SJ did this for altruistic reasons, but of course that is not true, it's incompetence. They are essentially allowing other academies to get access to talent they should have exclusive access to. It's absolutely head scratching. The new MLS Academy protected lists came out today. This is actually a tough one for any MLS team. Yes, the Quakes could have Geo-fenced more players but then the criticism is “they just did it to block them from developing elsewhere”. Does Diego Luna become the player he is today in San Jose? Probably not (see Jacob Akanyinge and Gilberto Fuentes as exhibit A). Luna was not blocked from relocating to Barcelona AZ academy but Alejandro Cano was. Have the Quakes developed Cano? Maybe, but he hasn’t been offered a first team contract (despite starting a ton of NextPro games with the top defensive numbers in the league). Would Cano have been better off at Barcelona AZ? Perhaps. Will the Quakes development of him pay off in San Jose? Perhaps as well. Will the Quakes get criticized either way? Of course they will.
This is just nuts... so you think the only thing keeping Gilbert Fuentes from being one of the best American players in MLS was that he was signed by the Quakes as opposed to going through the much more circuitous path of Barca residency academy -> USL El Paso Locomotive -> Real Monarchs -> RSL?? I think it's far more likely that the difference between Fuentes/Akanyirige and Luna/Barajas is that the Quakes talent identification is not great, and that if they had signed the latter pair they would have developed fairly similar to how they did elsewhere.
Brutal... San Jose Earthquakes: What we learned from their 2024 season Here’s a list of guys from San Jose’s player pathway who have shown significant development this past year: Cade Cowell Max Arfsten Diego Luna Fidel Barajas Know who none of those guys play for in 2024? The San Jose Earthquakes.
