From reddit: Sielaff415 6 points 1 day ago My dad plays with Luna’s dad, that guy said Luna wanted to sign with SJ when he went to El Paso from Barca AZ academy and the quakes didn’t want to offer him a contract! And he didn’t even want to leave SJ to go to Barca AZ residency because he’d be away from his family in the first place! ********ing Leitch is incompetent, that was a big part of his job before becoming GM. How is it that we sign so few of the talented players in our academy??
I wonder if Spivey is related to the same family that owned Spivey's Bakery located on San Carlos Street in San Jose? .
1822845303453552785 is not a valid tweet id hey look at that. One of their best is leaving. Leitch can you do anything right?!
“NEWS: Earthquakes Name Steven Beitashour Quakes Academy Under-15 Head Coach” (SJEarthquakes.com - Monday, 8/12/24) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
When I was a kid, I think it was Spivey's restaurant that advertised "Broasted Chicken". And wasn't it in the same shopping center as The Emporium?
Spivey's was on San Carlos and Shasta Ave. There is a dental office and other stores there now. Stickney's Oak Wood BBQ Sandwiches was located nextdoor to the Emporium. The specialty restaurant had sandwiches and ribs, along with a full coffee shop menu, and a cocktail lounge. The Cheesecake Factory is there now but they will never beat Stickney's.
...yeah, after it becomes clear from his college career that he's not all that good. That's what we do!
Yeah, NFL is a little different though. Not a lot of guys playing who didn't go to college. Who is our best ever Stanford player? Tanner Beason, JJ Koval, Bouda, Todd Dunivant, Adam Jahn, Will Richmond, Cam Cilley, Keegan Tingey... Is it Tanner Beason? Or am I missing someone? Dunivant had a better career than Tanner will but wasn't great for us and only played with us for 2 years. Then his dream came true - he was traded to LAG.
Dunivant is best. Started most of season on Quakes’ last Cup winning team. Went on to have a great career and last I heard was President of the team that knocked Quakes out of the Open Cup.
Sorry I can't get over his "Please let it be LA" when he knew he was going to be traded but didn't know what team yet. He will never be a good player to me after that, regardless of how he actually plays. I have a very long memory, and I hold onto grudges when it comes to LA stuff .
Why do we go out of our way to draft lots of Stanford players anyway? Feels like a lazy strategy if it just comes down to having seen them play in person more often.
I think it is because the Stanford Cardinal have appeared in the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Tournament 14 times in 23 seasons from 1997 to 2019. Also, because they won the College Cup in 2015, 2016, and 2017 and were semifinalists in 2019. Obviously, Stanford is doing something right and I would still rather pick and/or trust a college player from a top program like Stanford over a lowly overrated, overhyped academy product.
Well yeah, if Giroud used to play for the Quakes but was uneasy about the future of the team, and got really really excited when he heard that he was going to LA.
Stanford is consistently a good team, but there are good college players all over the country, and we are doing ourselves a disfavor if we aren’t opening up the funnel all the way to include all college teams. Our 3 best draft picks in the last 10 years, off the top of my head, might be Yueill, Marie, and Munie, none of them from Stanford.
The Quakes don't only pick from Stanford. Just looking at the last 3-4 drafts, many players came from far away.... Jack Skahan North Carolina George Asomani NC State Oskar Ågren Clemson Jamar Ricketts Cal State Northridge Whether they panned out, made the team or not is another story....
You forgot Munie. Skahan is a rare 2nd rounder who has actually stuck. Ricketts looks promising but he's been injured for a long time this season.
