Pretty okay article, but nothing we haven't already heard or read before. One major flaw in the article, though, is the constant assumption that it'll be a publicly-funded stadium and that a public vote may be needed. Lew Wolff has made it clear many times in various interviews that the stadium will be completely privately-funded. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
How did you glean that from the article? I just reread it again and I don't see any mention of using public money or a vote in it. They just say there is no gurantee it will happen which while pessemistic, is also true.
Some excerpts from the article: And though not referring to using public funds or to the need for a public vote, here's another somewhat erroneous assumption (after the "or"): Though bear in mind that this article hit shelves a day before the San Jose Mercury News article did and two days before the KTVU segment aired, so perhaps more accurate info was released hours after this article's release. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Oh my bad. I didn't see that there was a page 2 and 3. Its been a while since I've read a quakes article that was more then a paragraph.
I agree they do paint it like its going to be publically financed. But that's what newspapers were doing with the Fremont stadium for the A's too. They assume that Wolff will want public money and pubic input on the issue. He wants none of the first and as little of the latter as possible. The public are by and large stupid and don't know what they want. Better to leave them out of it since its not their money they don't deserve a say.
I'm glad we were able to pass the torch on to you. Now, when will you be holding the unofficial official groundbreaking of the stadium that may never be built. I'm sure you can get Beckham to show up. JK. Hopefully it will work out for you guys.
Well, on the Metro 60 to 90 day timescale, we would be getting our stadium in about 2016... Luckily, with AEG is out of the way, Wolff may get this done much sooner.
Like I said in the other thread, I knew something was up when I saw the 15 year old student apts boarded up and ready for the scrap heap...... My first and only love..... My Quakes are vastly becoming a reality! FORZA QUAKES! AEG VAFFAN CULO!
If I am not mistaken, that is the 1977 Quakes we see, along with the "full house" on the east side of Spartan Stadium. That was a pretty good year for the team, although not quite as successful as '76. The big names in that group would be Tony Simoes and Geoff Davies (who played in England for quite a while, before and after his time with the Quakes). The other "notable" face is that of Borut Skulj, a goalie replacement for the "out of favor" Mike Hewitt. Skulj lasted one game, with a disasterous first touch of the ball at Spartan Stadium....I believe that was the only time he played.
" group should know more about its plans "in 60 to 90 days." This part caught my attention sounds very interesting especially because we are about 72 days away from that Ecuador vs. Mexico match at the coliseum in which Earthquakes Soccer LLC will be the promoter of this game. I wonder if we'll have a major announcement made on that night !
As a former MetroStars now RedBulls fan trust me - 60-90 days means add 2-3 years to your original timetable. Look at what happened to Dallas - they lost 1 year when they flirted with that other Dallas suburb before finding Frisco - and remember the year they played in the high school? The MetroStars story is too involved to recount blow by blow - but let's just say it sucked - and they were one of the first teams to really find the motivation to leave their original stadium. DC United has been trying for how long? The only places where you see these things go up quickly are where there is available land - and a city council that isn't interested or knowledgable enough to look into the details. Chicago's stadium has the potential to lose Bridgeview's money - unless it starts picking up. In Commerce City i.e. Denver - the stadium is in the boonies and again like Frisco - interested in adding to it's growth. San Jose doesn't have any of these elements - however it does remind me a lot of the Cal State situation in Carson - where AEG worked it's HDC magic. What is my point - just like any building job - be sure to add more time on to what you are expecting.
