    So did our thread die a hari kari death? Finito? Kapooie?

    The basic premise of the BIGGEST MLS STADIUM & EXPANSION THREAD that existed was this:

    1. there were 4 hard core MLS followers who wanted an MLS team;

    2. we figured we could scrounge up another 15,000 souls to come out per game on average if we got a team;

    3. Chula Vista was probably the best place to build an SSS, but no letter campaign had yet begun;

    4. we were reduced to hoping for a Gold Cup match at Qualcomm, which wouldn't even had had any chance of involving the U.S.

    Go Spirit. :(

    Flashman, you can add a 5th SD-MLS freak to the list, I'm living out in Minnesota right now, but I am San Diego sports all the way.

    Well with the Padres moving into their own park in 2004, and IF the Chargers move to LA, Qualcomm Stadium will need some team to use their facility.

    Bonus about Qualcomm:

    * Wide enough to fit a FIFA regulation field
    * central location + light rail access that reaches the masses of the south county- all the way to the border

    I don't care if it's too big, I just want MLS!!!

    Good news, I'm moving back to San Diego tomorrow (well at least temporarily). Although if everything goes right, I'll be getting a job in Phoenix that would start in Feb or March. Anyway, I can now be considered an MLS freak in SD.

    Right on people! I have a topic that we can discuss. Lets say we did get a team...what should the name of the team be? I think San Diego Mission would be a good name for some reason. Either that or San Diego Union, as in the Union Tribune. Any good ideas?

    If we have a supporters club, could we call it "The Border Patrol"?

    The original Balboa Stadium was demolished in the late 70s because it did not meet earthquake code. A new, regional facility was built there and SD High School uses it as its football field. The old stadium which hosted such eclectic people as President Wilson, The Beattles, The Chargers, Aztecs, and more use to sit around 35k and was wide enough for use as a soccer because it had a track that was around it. The new stadium seats around 5,000. Attached is an article I found regarding the new stadium.

    Is this the stadium right next to City College?

    Yes I think it is, since I remember playing a high school soccer game there 5 or so years ago. IIRC the stadium is dug down, and just has a cement stadium with no bleachers or anything.

    Cute little stadium, though. I'd love to watch soccer games there. Maybe it would be better for an A-League team.

    Yup, it is used by City College as well I believe, but its main use is for high school sports at San Diego High. I saw some pictures of the old Balboa Stadium and they were quite nice. I am sure they have pictures on the net or at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park.

    Funny you mention it because I actually go to SDHS (yes, I am that young...and thank God its my last year lol.) Anyway, that's where they hold the football and soccer games. But the football lines are always there since it's turf and would be hard to cover them. If you go to sdhs.sandi.net they have a history of school section that talks about Balboa stadium. The site is down at the moment, but I will link you people to the page when it's back up.
