San Jose scored twice, San Diego just once, but one of those goals was LaKeysia Beene's own goal in the 61st minute. And that made the difference in a 2-1 San Diego victory. San Jose on the board first in the 49th minute with Tisha Venturini-Hoch's goal, but Julie Fleeting equalized five minutes later for the Spirit. And Thori Bryan's ironwoman streak of consecutive minutes played ended after two-plus seasons in the 78th minute. Discuss.
First, a duplicate post from what I had on the other thread: ---- Some photos from the game are already up: San Diego Spirit's Kerry Connors leaps over San Jose Cyberrays' Keri Sanchez while advancing the ball in the first half... (AP Photo) Um, not a very effective slide tackle, I must say. San Jose Cyberrays goalie LaKeysia Beene, right, makes the save over the head of San Diego Spirit's Joy Fawcett in the first half... (AP Photo) Nice save, 'Keysh. San Jose CyberRays' Ann Cook and San Diego Spirit's Aly Wagner battle for control of the ball during first-half action... (AP Photo) Cookie gets a face full of ball. ---- As for commentary, I'm going to wait until I see the tape on this one. Right now, looking at the subs and the scoring and the matchtracker tidbits I'm just all
the biggest thing that was different and stood out was how Katie Barnes didnt get any playing time at all and i dont remember the pre-game notes saying anything about her being injured but on the other hand im glad Boof and Di are getting better and got some playing time
Did Ann Cook play? That's all that really matters in the world. Well that and shoes and bike rides free of barking dogs that chase after you.
Based on last week's performance, I am glad that Barnes didn't play and Ann Cook got some quality time. It looks like she was really involved based on the ticker, but who knows how she actually played. I am anxious to hear about the game from someone who went. Anyone tape it???
Spirit Fan Input Just a short note - I felt that the C-Rays deserved a better fate, given that their two main offensive weapons were not there (a very lucky circumstance for the Spirit.) San Jose did everything that they could to win, playing good positional defense and advancing the ball downt the field fairly easily in the first half. They also were quick to take advantage of the fact that the ref was not going to call fouls for slide tackles and shoves from the back. The one problem that they had in the game was handling Julie Fleeting, who Thori Bryan seemed to mark all over the place. Thori left the game after shoving Julie into the backline boards late in the game, but somehow she was the one that ended up coming out of the game right after that - I do not know whether she turned an ankle or what... As a San Diego fan, I'm glad that my team escaped with 3 points!
Chiefs, I was surprised that you supported a full game without Katie Barnes instead of, say Clemens, who really has not done anythingfor the 'Rays this year. How do you see that? FWIW I would like to see lots more of Cookie playing but she will really have to shine now while some of the starters are injured to have any chance of securing a starting spot... BondOne
I have tape I got confirmation this morning that this tape is on its way to me, so barring shipping accident I should have it in a day or two. Let me know if you need a copy, Chiefs (or anyone else). FWIW, I'm still looking for a tape of last week's game...Anyone? Beuller? Beuller? :|
Like I said above...I will have a tape in just a few days. It's being shipped to me ASAP. I'll be happy to copy it for whoever needs one, and happier still to trade tapes if possible. PM me and we'll work something out. FYI my tape MAY be missing a few minutes off the end of the game--The person who taped it for me wasn't at home watching it, and the game started late, so even though he said he set it to run 10 minutes over he thinks there's a few minutes missing... I've got a second tape source, however, and that one may be complete--just not sure if the game is on the way yet or not. Anyway, I will let everyone know once I get it.
Re: Spirit Fan Input Didn't Cyberrays fans back in the day complain about when the Beat would play this way? I think they did. Interesting.
BondOne - I am NOT a fan of Clemens either and I thought I stated that after the first game. But, I can state it again - I don't like her play and don't think she is strong enough to be out there. I wasn't impressed with Barnes either last week. So I say try something new!
http://www.wusa.com/press_room/356810.html Barnes is listed as questionable for this weekend's match against Atlanta. She has a calf strain, so that is probably why(or at least one reason why) she didn't get in last weekend.
Re: Re: Spirit Fan Input Take it to rivalry, ya brat. None of the CyberRays fans have even seen this game! Tsunami is a Spirit homer!
I just noticed that shocking item in Dylan Hernandez' column in the Merc this AM. We really should do something to commemorate that streak -- it was truly marvelous.
random drivel... maybe some kind of pre-game accolade for Bryan before the next home match? It's not easy to be there game in and game out... Fleeting is the real deal--someone next game will have to mark her, maybe even double team on her but then that might open up MacMillian for a strike... As for Beene's gaffe, can't really fault her for that (compared to another OG mistake on April 19 where the keeper didn't really have a crowd surrounding him). Based of what was mentioned about the play, in a group scrambling for the ball it would have to be a grab for the keeper to grab or punch and for an opposing striker to hit the ball into the net. Couple that with a long throw in/flip from Kim Pickup and it's anyone guess. Subtract the Brazilians, it's a different CyberRays team out there. It's going to get harder with the Beat this weekend. (Anyone make the San Diego trip? The second one is in late June, with a nice Spirit bobblehead being given away!!!!!!!) Cheers!
