Good question. Since it’s gone some other team should take the Breakers name. Should apply what San Diego is known for.
Good way to get sued. SDCC has been suing anyone using the Comic-Con name lately. And the courts sided with them that it really is their mark and not a generic term.
I checked the trademark database, regarding the "Breakers" name. It appears that the new USFL owns the trademark for the "Boston Breakers", the "New Orleans Breakers" and the 'Portland Breakers". Since their trademarks deal with American Football, I believe the "San Diego Breakers" for women's soccer would be be okay, especially if they added "SC" (Soccer Club) to the name.

In theory, I actually like it how it is; each player part of one whole. However, when news of the name first broke on Instagram, literally no one got it right. Everybody that posted insisted on calling the team the Waves. This is going to be kind of irritating.
